Default CFI Jim Spaller severely injured in a crash

30West recommended that I use Jim as my CFI up here in the Syracuse, NY area and I think a couple others here know him. He was in a crash last week that killed the pilot he was either training or doing a checkride with.

For the record, this was a seaplane so all the reporter comments about him crashing 500 yards shy of the airport are moot since they were attempting to land in a nearby pond. It seems as though the drag on the seaplane when they went into a planned simulated engine failure on approach was too aggressive to recover from.

Anyway, if you can, say a prayer for Jim (who is in critical condition) and the pilot who passed on.

Was he a Cornell grad and former army aviator? I think I flew with Jim when I was in high school. I hope he can pull through.

Normally, posts to a 3 month old thread would irritate me.

However, in this case, I think it's wonderful news that we're all glad to hear

Glad he's recovering well, and good on him for getting back out there instructing again. I wish him well.

Yes, and yes. As a former student I'm going to try attend the benefit.
