| Does anyone recommend having a car during training? Is it needed? Just curious for planning purposes. Thanks |

| Senior Member | Yes, have a car. It will make your life infinity + 8 better (I heard only Chuck Norris can count that high ).I've had at the fortunate experience that all training (sans 1 time) was close enough it was an easy drive. If your training might take place at 2 locations, you may not want a car until after indoc (assuming Pt.121) If your training is in NY and you live in CA, I'd see if there's a person or 22 in class that live closer. Most times people that live close drive, and the others that come to town with no car buy beer or gas. Good luck at School!!! BTW, where you at? Someone(s) here might share the class date with you.

| Senior Member | I drove my car to training. I think of the 16 of us there were 5 cars (one guy lived in Houston already, the rest of us drove in from all over the country), and it was great that someone was always going somewhere...grocery store, movie, bowling, whatever. It was almost a 1000 mile drive out there and I would definitely do it again. It was only about $90 in gas each way.

| I rented a car on the weekends me and my sim partners would rent a car and get out of the hotel for some needed bar appreciation time.

| I'd say it depends on who you are working for. My company had their hotel next to a supermarket and several restaurants. It also contracted a van that would bring us anywhere within reason (schedule dependent). I definitely didn't need a car. In fact, out of 12, I don't think anyone had one.

I couldn't imagine having gone through initial without my car. It made life sooooo much better. In fact, it made it tolerable. If you're just going to "live in the books" at the hotel, then by all means, just leave your car. However, I liked being able to hang out alone when I needed to, get to the airport when I needed to, visit friends in the area when I wanted, find food where I wanted to. I totally didn't live "in the books". I trained hard, but got away when I wanted to. I don't do well without a car for more than 4 days or so. I'd say if you can drive it in less than 7 hours, take the car. Quote:

| Old Skool | Lloyd... you're disappointing me man. Shouldn't we love our flying job so much that we should be willing just to live at the hotel during training because gosh darn, we are getting paid to FLY an AIRPLANE! ![]() |

| Senior Member | Mine is a Mazda3, paid about $3 a gallon at the time. Cruise control at 75-80mph for hours at a time on flat roads...the thing sips gas. I think I averaged 34mpg over several long trips last summer which is better than it's rated for even (Ohio to Florida to Virginia to Florida to Texas to Florida to Ohio). Now if I still had my wrangler...no way would I have driven that out there

| I didn't have a car during initial training and on the one hand it kind of sucked but on the other hand it kind of trapped me and forced me to study and walk/bike around. Got some excercise!

| Senior Member | I would definitely reccomend having a car during training. The ability to go where you want, when you want is worth it by itself. Also, being able to carry as much crap to the schoolhouse as you want. "Why is your room filled with gigantic stuffed teddy bear's and legos, Denny?" "Because I was able to fit them in the car." "Yeah, SO! YEAH, SO!?!" On top of all that, the road trip in anticipation of starting at a new place is super cool!
