Default KIAD

How buisy is KIAD generally on a Tuesday around 1100 local? The owner of one of the airplanes I fly needs to go to DC on the first of April and asked me to fly him into IAD. Aircraft as an AA5 Grumman Tiger by the way. I'd prefer to go into JYO leesburg executive so as not to piss everyone off by flying a light single into a major international airport, but if its not too crazy on a Tuesday afternoon around the time I mentioned, then I will make the flight.

So for you Washington guys...Whats the scoop? Will I be pissing people off or its not too crazy around that time?

Google the Potomac tracon and give them a call. I used to take students in there occasionally, and they definitely have a preferred time of day. Though, from what I have seen they can usually work you onto 1R/19L pretty easily as that is used as a departure runway until it gets really busy. I cant remember when it wasnt busy, but I am sure you can work something out. If you do go to Leesburg say hello to the folks for me....Thats where I instructed.

Actually, that might not be the worst time to try to get into Dulles in a GA plane. It should be between pushes, but I still don't know if I'd do it. The smallest GA stuff I see near the FBO there are biz jets. I have flown in there just for the heck of it but always just taxied back and departed. You don't say when you plan to depart, but there the afternoon push starts pretty early and goes fairly late.

I recently was sent to Dulles for a work project and spent a day out on the runways with one of the Ops Managers and he said its getting to the point were there aren't many lulls at Dulles anymore.

My Tiger is based at JYO so if there is anything I can tell you about that let me know.

Manassas is also pretty close to D.C.

Would be leaving immediately after dropping off and getting fuel and picking up clearance so I'd say around 11:30-45ish...I just talked to Signature and they are able to take a light single. Would 11:30-12:00pm be right about the beginning for the major afternoon pick up on a Tuesday?

No, I think you should be between pushes at that time. The International arrival bank starts around 3PM and it rolls on from there, til mid evening.

That's not to say they won't be busy, as from what I saw there seems to be a steady stream of arrivals and departures between pushes, but it sould be doable.

Just be sure to have your aiport diagram available so you don't get lost amongst all that concrete and you should be good to go.
