That is the type of thing that makes it "hit home." I had the same feeling another time a few years ago.

It is a good time for a mental wake-up call that this is not just driving a vehicle around. It is a level up from that in responsibility and risk.

A student pilot was at the controls when the small-twin engine plane he was flying with his instructor crashed Friday at an airport near Rome, killing both.

Floyd County chief deputy coroner Tony L. Cooper on Saturday morning identified the student pilot as Lokesh Venkat, 24, an Indian national. The instructor was Kwang Yi, 34, of Duluth.

"We think they were practicing touch-and-goes, and never actually landed," said Cooper, who talked to investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration at the site Saturday.

The plane Venkat was piloting — a Beechcraft BE76 — was registered to Aviation Atlanta Inc., a flight training school based out of Peachtree-DeKalb Airport in Chamblee, where the flight originated Friday.

The plane crashed short of the runway. "They came in low and were circling around and crashed from about 700 feet," said Cooper. "It was a nose down crash. They didn't clip any trees."

Aviation Atlanta president Phil Sanders, who could not be reached Saturday morning, on Friday described instructor Yi as "a tremendous man — our best instructor. I can't say enough good things about him."

Sanders declined to say Friday how long Yi had been working for Aviation Atlanta. He said his company does its best to keep crashes from occurring, "but sometimes we can't," he said.

He would not comment further.

The crash happened at 4:20 p.m. at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, located about seven miles north of Rome and 65 miles northwest of Atlanta.

The plane's occupants had been doing "multi-engine training," which includes practicing flying with only one of the two engines working, said Howie Lowden, chairman of the airport commission.

The Beechcraft had done several "touch and gos" — landing and taking off repeatedly — while doing the training, he said.

As the plane took off again, it appeared to be struggling and caught the eye of Mike Mathews, the airport's manager, who was driving around the airport.

"I just kind of glanced over and saw it," Mathews said. "It just looked like it wasn't climbing too well."

Once the plane reached somewhere between 500 and 1,000 feet, Mathews estimated, it banked to the left and plunged nose-down into a wooded area near a small lake at the southern end of the airport.

Upon impact, the plane burst into flames, Mathews said. He drove to the crash site and was one of the first to arrive.

"Just tried to put out the fire," Mathews said. "Not a whole lot you could do. It was pretty hot."

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, said Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Mathews said instructors from Aviation Atlanta bring students to the airport three to four times a week.

They like practicing flying there because the airspace is uncontrolled, so pilots just have to be careful to communicate with other aircraft in the air and on the ground, Mathews said.

I've had to keep myself alive a few times, one I remember very distinctively.

It's what we (you - general use) do. Sometimes things happen far too quickly, so who knows.

I just hope this was a real engine failure, and not a poorly planned simulated engine failure after takeoff gone bad.

I've done enough examples and demonstrations of how bad performance can be in a true single engine pattern (simulated engine failure after takeoff at 500ft AGL). Really opened up the eyes of my students.

Sorry, hope I'm not MMQB'ing.

184AA i believe...I flew that airplane several times...red and white paint...They've been running with the 3 in the fleet the last couple of years but and now with this...it leaves 30D and 16L....
