Default Run for your lives! It's a single engine Cessna!

Here we go again.

http://www.salon.com/wires/ap/2008/0...ent/index.html

A single-engine airplane violated restricted airspace around the nation's capital Wednesday and got to within six miles of the U.S. Capitol building before being diverted, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The airspace violation prompted security officials to temporarily raise the threat level from yellow to orange and order personnel in the Capitol building to prepare to evacuate, but the incident was resolved before an evacuation was ordered.

A propeller-driven Cessna 177, which had taken off from Carroll County airport in north-central Maryland, entered restricted airspace 30 miles north of Washington at 12:12 p.m. EDT at 1,800 feet with no radio, FAA spokesman Hank Price said.

The intruding aircraft reached a point six miles northwest of the Capitol building before being diverted and escorted by interceptor aircraft to Leesburg, Va., airport where it landed at 12:44 p.m., Price added.

Can we please get rid of the ADIZ? Please?

I know how to figure out who to vote for in the general election. I'm going to write a letter to each of the candidates. Whoever says they'll get rid of the ADIZ will get my vote. Whoever says it is a vital national security tool will not.

Something says I'll be voting for Ralph Nader or a Green Party candidate if I do that.

There's far more to fear from a Ryder truck driving around public buildings than a small single engine airplane.

I had a dream I was in the northeast and violated the ADIZ in my C-152. The dream was like watching a movie, in that it had music and different camera angles and everything. For some reason my student in my dream wanted to crash the 152 into the Capitol and while I realized that was a mistake I decided to go along with it (a good instructor allows his students to make mistakes, after all.) We got over DC and I see the Capitol and I tell my student to do slow flight. The camera pans over to a congressman or someone in a suite looking out the window at the approaching cessna and he dramatically screams, then back to the cockpit while we're puttering along. Dramatic music starts playing. Back to the congressman then back to the cockpit a few more times (the congressman screams throughout) for about a minute, each change getting quicker and quicker. Then the camera finally pans out to show the airplane in relationship to the building and its obvious we're inching along going like 10kts (must be a small headwind :P) and we never seem to be getting any closer. I look down at my watch and realize we've been flying a while and tell my student that if we crash into the capitol building we wont have enough fuel to come back to the airport so we have to turn back now. He whines a little bit like 'Awww, man!' and I'm like 'You should have done a better preflight check of the winds, mister!'

The dream changes at this point and I don't remember the rest.

They're probably going to send me to gitmo for that. Great.

Nah, Gitmo is over rated, we have few other locations that are more private away from prying eyes

the biggest joke of the matter is, at little ace we penetrate the adiz on a nearly weekly basis VFR, without a flight plan into and out of the alaskan adiz either in saint paul and saint george, or dutch harbor, and the controllers will actually cover for us (I just found that out from a controller a couple days ago). Wait until the russians come flying over in big ole bear bombers then the'll be surprised "Oh, yeah, that's just ace."

One of the crews did get scrambled on however. The controllers called off the fastmovers after a tongue lashing to an uncarring crew.

Eh, its not a big deal at all really. I deal with it everyday. It only becomes a pain in the ass when you call up Potomac and they cant find your flight plan and you have to do circles while they look for it. That has only happened 1 time in the past 4 months though.

That explains why they stopped departures going to certain fixes, then stopped all departures for a period of time at Dulles today. We only had to sit for 10-15 minutes before they started launching again though, and figured it was something to do with 'national security', although ATC didn't tell us much.

SIX MILES? That's almost one mile. And THAT'S almost on top of. And that's almost 9/11. Thankfully they redirected it before a national catastrophe. Whew!

Oh yeah....sorry

It's incredible to me how these ADIZ incursions keep on happening, especially after all the media coverage that results each time it happens. Do these pilots watch the national news? I live in the Midwest, but if I were to plan a flight in the vicinity of the Washington ADIZ, I'm pretty sure I would do everything possible to familiarize myself with its boundaries and operating requirements. Anything to avoid being intercepted by a couple of F-16s. Amazing...

First off, there is no way of knowing where this pilot was based. He could have been from DMW, or not. If he was, then there is no reason to not have known about it. I can see why he may have inadvertently entered the ADIZ if he doesn't reside on the east coast. What if he did know about the ADIZ but he didn't realize he had entered it, or thought that he may have, but his ego didn't let him turn around. Not a reasonable excuse, but it happens. Have you flown a /U C172 in or near the ADIZ? Sans Garmin 295 or better with a current nav database, there is no easy way to tell if you're outside, near, or in the ADIZ. Hell, the one time I was flying VFR into the JYO shelf in a Cirrus with the Avidyne, I was on edge.

Granted, if he could see the White House six miles ahead of him on a clear and a million day and didn't think about turning around, then yeah thats a problem.

6 Miles in a SE Cessna. That's what, about 10 minutes out?

Plenty of time to evacuate.

I think that every responsible pilot does what he can to familiarize himself with the ADIZ. The problem is, it's not like there's a big line on the ground that says ADIZ DO NOT PENETRATE.

Because I've done a lot of flying around here, I know the landmarks on the west side of the ADIZ. I know I can use a tank farm and I-70 because I do a lot of flying out of GAI.

But, put me on the east side of the ADIZ, and I have no clue what landmarks to use. I might very well inadvertently penetrate the ADIZ because I thought I was outside of it but crossed into it.

Plus, there are times where ATC thinks you're in the ADIZ but you're not. When you leave the ADIZ, you contact Potomac approach and tell them you're clear. There have been a number of times where I know I'm clear because I'm past the landmarks, but they say I'm still in it.

Dude I'd rather be in the Capitol than out on the front yard if a friggin cessna was going to attack.

2300 lbs of easily bent aluminum........scary while in a building. but if i'm outside I'll be 100% ok

I live in the DC area and agree that the ADIZ is a bit silly. But it seems to me that just a little bit of cross country planning (even if you don't have a nice Garmin) should prevent this kind of thing from ever happening. Not trying to pass judgement but the pilot involved doesn't sound too bright...even if he isn't from around here.

Where's that guy with the pitbull attacking the Cessna? That's gotta be like the third best avatar I've ever seen in my life.

There're almost 1,000,000 terrorists in the US now!

With 300,000,000 people in the US that means every two or three planes will have a terrorist on board!!!

Logic is not allowed in this topic.

Does anybody remember that military pilot (I think an FA-18 type) who stood up in an FAA forum said a few things (like R*T=D problems), and later the TSA had the FAA remove the minutes from the web/public record.

10 miles is nothing in a Lear.
