| Junior Member | As construction of the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP) progresses, runways at O’Hare are being re-designated. The future north runway is scheduled to be commissioned in November 2008. To avoid pilot confusion, the FAA has mandated a phased re-designation program for O’Hare’s existing east-west runways at O’Hare International Airport. About the Renaming Plan In order to accommodate pilots as they adjust to the visual development of the future north runway, the FAA and the City of Chicago have agreed to make the following runway name changes as part of a phased re-designation program:
Currently, O’Hare has two east-west runways. New parallel runways, both north and south of the existing runways, will be constructed over the next few years. By the end of 2011, the Airport will have four parallel east-west runways, two on the north side of the main terminal core area and two on the south. In the future, all runways north of the terminal will be referred to as 9-27 Runways and all runways south of the terminal will be 10-28 Runways. The two north side runways will be named 9L-27R and 9R-27L, and the south side runways will be named 10L-28R and 10R-28L. -------------------------------------------------------- Now, I know some of this stuff is old and out dated, but some of you guys might be able to expect in the future. I know they already have there 2nd control tower set up as I saw the structure already up but I doubt anything is inside of there. Hope this helped! http://www.flychicago.com/ohare/runways/plans.pdf ![]() |

| Junior Member | It took about a week after they changed runway names last year for everyone to get on the same page... Hopefully when they're done I'll have to make fewer announcements to the pax about what a groundstop is...

. I hope they get some wider taxi-ways off of the runways too because i've seen a few times when then damn 747s come in and they only have certain taxi ways they can go down cuz of there massive wingspan and cause problems.Did you fly into O'hare the other day when the weather was crap. Ceilings were down to about 200-300 feet AGL, and visibility was VV003!!! Guy came into my work and said that they were stacking planes 5-6 high over about 6-7 different holding VOR designated areas trying to get them into the airport... thats just insane. I've seen on clear days I look directly down the runways where there landing that day and you can see 4-5 planes lined up on clear days... Hopefully these new runways and control tower will ease things up for O'hare inbound AND outbound. | |
