| Hello all Is there any downside on skipping multi engine rating in the long run? I'm still in my first year of college, so immediate multi engine time is not necessary for me. I was thinking about doing CFI rating right after the commercial single rating and do the multi rating and MEI by junior year. Would it be better for me to do the multi rating before commercial single than skipping it? Thanks in advance. |

| Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah! I gotta do it either way, but then I'm just trying to get as little loans as possible on my training . |

| I think its a great idea as long as you have a reason for doing it the way you want to do. Seems like you have a reason-CFI to make money while you are still training. Makes sense. Then, when you are training for your multi do it from the right seat so you can do your CMEL and MEI ride at once. |

| Old Skool | I still dont have a commercial multi, haven't really needed it yet. Half the guys I work with that have it, don't use it. They all say things like, "I wonder if I remember how to fly a twin". Wont hurt you one bit to wait a little. That is of course if your goals do not include hopping in a passenger jet at 258 total time.

| Getting the CFI first is a great idea, as it will allow you to teach throughout college. One of the only downsides I can think of is the cost of the add-on due to oil prices. Back in 2000, I paid $1,275 at ALL ATPs for the add-on. The same course is $3,795 now. |

| Back in 2000 I was paying $65/hr for a new 172 @ ERAU. 1 year later it was $80, and the next year it was $105. The biggest increase in cost came from soaring insurance costs after 9/11. Fuel prices were relatively stable at that point. ATP's multi is what, around 10 hours? 10 hours x 20 gph = 200 gallons of fuel. Going from $1/gal to $4/gal would've only increased their costs $700. I wouldn't worry too much about oil prices when figuring to sit out or not. Just IMO .

| With the demand for CFIs so high these days, many places will pay for add-on ratings like this as a retention incentive. In other words, if you put it off for now, you might get it for free later.

| Eventually you will need it so you might as well get it. Who knows what fuel could be in a year or two. I was lucky I did mine in a fuel efficient airplane(twin comanche) back when avgas was almost half of what car gas is now.

| Junior Member | im sorta in your same shoes man. I'll be getting my Instrument and Commercial this summer. Than like you in the fall semester i would like to get my CFI before i start multi stuff. Two reasons really, one I'll be able to work part time instructing. Two the CFI's at OU get discounted rates on training if their employed. |

| I'll be taking the CSEL in a couple weeks and I plain on going straight to the CFI. The reason being that CFI's here get a 10% discount on rentals, which equates to saving about $20 per hour in our duchesses.

| Probably a roll of the dice. If you can afford it sooner I would just get it done. Like the bdhill mentioned you may not need it so quickly, but then again you might also miss opportunities. (You can better predict what you might expect in your training community than I do.) I got my multi-com shortly after my commercial and finished my MEI only a few months after my CFI. It worked out well because where I worked there were several twins and not many MEI's. So I ended up doing a ton of checkouts and multi ratings. I got my multi time very quickly.

| I would wait and have lots of patience. I eventually had a student pay for both my multi-engine rating AND my MEI, because she needed me to provide training for her in her newly-acquired pressurized multi-engine aircraft. What - not enough multi-PIC time to get your MEI? She paid me to ferry another of her new twins across the country to gain that time. Total cost for my multi AND MEI? I think I put a couple of thousand in my pocket to get those tickets. In todays market, I'm pretty sure that you can find those same opportunities. You have to work for them, though.
