| Newbie | When applying to a Regional, does the background check include your credit history. If a credit report is checked, what would be examples of discrepancies that would be considered a job killer? Lates, charge off's, settlements, BK's, Foreclosures? Any advise on this subject would be appreciated. |

| Old Skool | They are looking at your over all history to see if you are responsible and looking for fraud. They also check your SSN to verify your work history. I got called in to HR's office at Shuttle when they noted a discrepacy. After further investigation I found out two other people were using my SSN for a job. |

| I think I know what you may be thinking. They look at your credit history and see that its crap and move on to the next guy. I honestly don't think they either do this or care. Ill be the first to say that my credit is crap...like just...crap. I went through a hard time in my life after a my employer who paid well (base of $40,000 plus commission...very nice) was found to be padding his tax returns. Needless to say none of the employees knew this until one day we came to work and there were honestly chains on the door. Unemployment only pays so much. It was hard keeping a family of 4 afloat. I'm out from under all that debt now, but my credit took a HUGE hit with late payments on pretty much everything - in retrospect I should have just claimed bankruptcy but I like to own up to what I...well owe. I was always scared once I applied at the regionals, they would take one look at my credit and "no thanks" based off of what I heard. No such thing happened. The point really is "credit history" - no. Work history? Probably. SSN check? Most definitely. |

| Newbie | Thank you all for you replies. Here's the story. I currently have very good credit, however I got caught up in the housing boom and purchased an investment home. I am now upside down on it and now it's costing me money to keep it. I have a tenant in it right now, but what I charge her for rent isn't enough to cover all the expenses. My wife and I are thinking we need to walk on it, which I'm having a hard time with because my credit will take a hit and I'm want to do the responsible thing. I'm about a couple of months away from starting to apply for a regional job and was curious to see if a ding on my credit such as a foreclosure or a short sale would put me in jeopardy. Thank you guys for your input, that really helped me to put things in perspective. |

| Easy. When you fill out your application on airlineapps for a company you gave all your info, ssn, license numbers, all that good stuff. They send it through a company in Florida to run a prelim background, SSN check, and employment history. |

| They are primarily looking at criminal history and verifying addressess, education and employment history. I would be surprised if any regional is spending much time looking at your financial history (except, perhaps, if it is a total disaster). It is illegal to refuse to hire someone because they filed for bankruptcy.

Personally, I find the whole "credit check for a job" thing very insulting. Do I get to run a credit check on all of the supervisors to include the CEO/COO/Owner? Highly unlikely. Criminal? Absolutely. Job History? You bet! Credit? Where I have loans and credit cards and when/if I pay my bills is between me and the creditor, not my employer. That said, I don't think you'll have to worry. -mini

And as for the other above comment... It may be illegal for someone not to hire you because of bankruptcy, it would be pretty hard to prove that that was why...
