Anyone know if the Embraer E-Jets are an original design from the floor up? Or did EMB maybe buy the original design of the Fairchild 728 jet, and simply rename, and mod it into their own E-line? They do look strikingly similar. Opinions, facts, you decide? Fairchild 728 Jet Embraer 170 |

The Doh jet looks like a mini 787

| Old Skool | Well what the heck man? This is like some kind of honeypot, designed to draw out and document the all a.net geeks on here! Besides, you can clearly see one airplane is blue and white, and the other one has some yellow and green. Totally different. |

Embraer did in fact buy the blueprints from Fairchild when they went under. It's not a clean sheet design.

Actually, Embraer hired alot of Boeing engineers when they were layed off and most were from the 737 line. The electrical system is almost exactly like a 73 as well as the hydraulic system, even down to the PTU's....

I wouldn't say they are strikingly similar, more like somewhat. The 728 looks wider and fatter in the fuselage. Also the nose line is different as well as where the fuselage joins the wing root. Also the engine cowling looks larger. Other than the fact that they are both low wing, wing mounted engines, I can see a major difference in their design lines. |

I'd take the 728. Just because when I tell my friends I fly a "real" airplane, and not one of those silly RJs, the 700-series designation would make it all the more believable.

Just that they bought the 728 blueprints, and used them as a foundation to build their "own design."

The DO 728 looks similar, but is completely different from the E-Jets. LH Cityline was the launch customer for the 728 (I think they had option for the 928) Totally Fly by wire. 6 big Honeywell Primus Epic screens up front. I was to have a conveyor belt in the cargo floor for baggage loading... typical Dornier totally over-engineered until the money ran out... First the Russians, then the Chinese were going to buy the company but all deals fell though... Now if you asked about the Sukhoi S100 that would be a different story... Cabin Height (aisle to ceiling) E170 79in (2.00m) D728 84in (2.14m) S100 83.9in (2.13m) Fuselage Width (outside) E170 119in (3.01m) D728 128in (3.25m) S100 127.48in (3.24m) Out of the three prototypes of the 728 some guy bought one for a few Euros and another one had the wings chopped off. Here's a shot of the unfinished cockpit, gotta love the blue! By the way the Dornier granddaddy Do24 is still flying (saw it in SBA last year) They tested the NT wing with the double cranked leading edge on this before putting it on the 228... Cheers George Last edited by georgetg; February 10th, 2008 at 01:12. Reason: can't spell, added the Sukhoi |

Let me know how easy the training is for you on that RJ. Because I flew a *real* airplane first (1900) and she wasn't half as complex as an RJ. Its more complicated programming the friggin autopilot to fly the damn approach then it is to click it the hell off and hand fly. An airplane is an airplane dude, the objective is to collect a paycheck, enjoy what you do and have fun.

I like the cockpit windows on the 728. Kinda similar to the md11's big windows.

Just my 2 cents.... I have heard that the E-170 started as an Airbus project that got in the shelves due to the A-380... Embraer bought the plans and modified it into the E-jet. but just like the similarity with the 728... it is all rumors. What is not rumor is the fact that the E-Jets are selling like hot cakes... (BTW- I am flying the 170 - 175)
