Default ADIZ Closed?

You've got to be kidding me. I think this one might take the cake for being the most ridiculous move the FAA has made in regards to the ADIZ in quite some time.

Quote:
==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==

ADIZ OFF LIMITS TO GA DURING STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS ON MONDAY
AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots in and near the
Washington, D.C., area that the FAA has issued a notam restricting
flight in the Washington, D.C., Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ)
during President Bush's State of the Union address on Monday, Jan. 28.
See AOPA Online for a graphical depiction of the restriction
( http://www.aopa.org/images/whatsnew/...ams/7-0206.gif ).

General aviation flight in the D.C. ADIZ will be banned during the
national security event. All waivers for flight into the ADIZ or Flight
Restricted Zone (FRZ) will be suspended during that time, except for
those beginning with ELO, GOV, or SPO. GA aircraft on an IFR flight
plan arriving or departing Dulles International (IAD) and Baltimore/
Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) may be authorized.

Special procedures will be temporarily suspended at the DC-3 airports,
College Park (CGS), Potomac Airfield (VKX), and Washington Executive/
Hyde Field (W32), along with Barnes (MD47), Flying M Farms (MD77),
Mountain Road (MD43), Robinson (MD14), Skyview (51VA), and Vint Hill
Farms Station (04VA).

The "maneuver area" and ingress and egress procedures at Leesburg (JYO)
will also be suspended. For more information, read the FAA's flight
advisory ( http://www.aopa.org/flightplanning/a...80107union.pdf ).

==> TFR DETAILS <==

SIZE:
30-nm-radius TFR encompassing the D.C. ADIZ and FRZ
Surface up to 17,999 feet msl

EFFECTIVE TIMES:
8 p.m. until 11 p.m. local on Monday, Jan. 28

IMPACTED AIRPORTS:
Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA)
South Capitol Street Heliport (09W)
Potomac Airfield (VKX)
Washington Executive/Hyde Field (W32)
Andrews Afb (ADW)
College Park (CGS)
Davison AAF (DAA)
Freeway (W00)
Maryland (2W5)
Suburban (W18)
Tipton (FME)
Montgomery County Airpark (GAI)
Washington Dulles International (IAD)
Lee (ANP)
Manassas Regional/Harry P. Davis Field (HEF)
Davis (W50)
Quantico Mcaf /Turner Field (NYG)
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI)
Leesburg Executive (JYO)
Barnes (MD47)
Flying M Farms (MD77)
Mountain Road (MD43)
Robinson (MD14)
Skyview (51VA)
Vint Hill Farms Station (04VA)

Read AOPA's plain-language notam explanation
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#8/0828-plain ).

View the notam ( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#8/0828 ).

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.
TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.

I guess they're concerned since all the big wigs will be in the same place. Still sucks, though.

Yeah, but I don't recall this happening during the last one.

They obviously think there is some kind of a threat this year but it still sucks for any GA pilot based inside the ADIZ.

It happened last year. Even the carriers on the DOH "approved" list have to get special briefings from dispatch during the event.

They have done this every year since the creation of the ADIZ around DC. I instruct out of Manassas. But considering its only from 8pm till 11pm, its no big deal.

I guess since I have been dealing with the ADIZ since I began flying this is kind of a non-event and not really a big deal. The only time the president really becomes a pain is when he decides to go to Quantico and make a speech. Then we get a TFR at Manassas and its normally in the MIDDLE of a day, thats when I start to lose money.

This administration constantly thinks there is some threat, with or without intel.

But whatever, another ridiculous move.

Actually, they just want YOU to think there's a threat. "Subservience Through Fear" ought to be the Bush administration's motto.

This is true.

Chomsky's Politics of Fear anyone. . .(I know I know. . .Chomsky was not the first person to reveal the obviousness of using fear as a political tactic. . .)

400-hour wonders will still be able to fly their RJ's right into the ADIZ and FRZ on Monday night.

Even if they didn't close it in other years, this year does make sense...

Think of it this way... election year... 3 of the front running candidates are currently U.S. Senators. Not only could someone with a sick mind take out almost the entire US government (thank you Tom Clancy), but could also eliminate the potential next president as well.

However, that kind of threat is not going to come from GA... but restricting GA flight might help lower controller workload so they can possibly be a bit more aware of anything happening that is out of the ordinary.
