Transition to G1000

Anyone have any insight in the transition from a traditional cockpit to a G1000?

Not a huge transition, especially if you are used to a Garmin GPS.

Keep scanning, the instruments are just in different places.

Ive done around 30 transitions and it can be done easily.

My typical program was go through a syllabus of a flight scenario from preflight to after landing on the g1000 sim just going over the basics and showing some tips and tricks. After the sim we would go on a flight (2 if needed) to cover the exact same thing we did in the sim to help put it into practical terms. If wanted we would go on another optional flight and do a fun short cross country where I would show them all of the practical uses in real world apps as well as a bunch of short cuts and things you cant just learn from a manual.

Or...it can be done with a take home G1000 course and 1 flight with a friend of CFI. Its no big deal at all.

I had people tell me the tapes were going to be a bear to deal with, of course they were only repeating what others told them. I found the transition quite simple and very natural. The human brain interprets data, not the way the data is presented. Read through the manual and you'll be sitting in clover.

Mojo, does Skymates have any G1000 King Schools Training dvd kits left? Randall told me to pick one up today. So, I'll probably do that this afternoon.

Its not very hard at all, I read a book about G1000 that helped me alot ! Here is the website, www.g1000book.com. The book is by Max Trescott its pretty good and shows how everything think works, They also offer software too but i have never tryed it.

I did all of my instrument in a G1000 and the transition was easy as can be

. Now the G1000 does have a ton of features which you may not be able to totally grab while in the air. I went to the Garmin website https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=153&pID=6420 and purchased the G1000 trainer program. It’s an awesome way to REALLY learn the system inside and out so when you go up next your will have that much better of an understanding. Hope this help!!

Its pretty seamless initially, If you want to dig deeper into some of the more advanced features it may take a few solid hours with a CFI... dont forget to look out the window.

Other than thats its great. Oh, but if the power goes out on it, the plane will stop flying.

It isn't a "kit", like the other King stuff. It is a just a packet of CD-Rom lessons. Last time I checked, we had a couple in stock. I recommend riding along in the back seat during other peoples' flights, if they allow you to, and get as much free time in the airplane as you can.

"master" is a bit of a stretch but you could be "safe" enough to use its basic features and fly the airplane

I have a hundred or so hours of teaching it and I am at the level of proficient and knowledgable but no where near mastery. I was always learning something new.

I did fly a 172 G-1000 tonight out of Skymates....it was nice....and while the flying wasn't too much of a transtition, all the great features will take a while to learn.

Mojo,

I didn't get a chance to play too much with that stuff....I was focused on the PFD mostly...trying to get the scan down and stuff....I'll be flying "echo" again on Saturday with Randall....that's a nice bird

Hopefully, I'll get to play with more of the toys

I agree, I used the wrong terminology for that. I pretty much meant mine with the scan used and where to look for what. Going into the different options and what not, now that will take a little bit of time.
