My grandfather was stationed in Roswell, NM during the 1950's.... the only quirky thing he remembers was having to get the runway de-tumbleweeded.

I had a friend of mine who went to that base in the 80s before the F117A became public to have a look at it to see if the plane would work for carrier ops. There is more to the story, but that is classified.

The 117 was based at Tonopah (KTTR) starting in 1982.
