Default Obama's Gulfstream 2 hits another aircraft.

What I wanna know is....why the hell was the C-208 parked on the runway!?
I wish the media could get it right sometimes.

I think we should take a second and praise the Mighty Caravan. It stood up strong to the FAR LEFT (wingtip of Senator Obama's airplane).

'A toast to the Van!

10-12 people in a 'Van? It seems crowded enough with 9 in there

I think Obama needs some new flight crews.

First they get lost on their way to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Now they hit a parked Caravan.

How much bad luck can the man have when it comes to air travel?

I didn't know that presidential wanna-be's had secret service follow them around.

It was probably not Obama's plane, it was more than likely a charter. Plus, in leu of a campaign donation, some people or companies, allow candidates to use their planes for free, so this could have been any flight crew.

I do know that once they get the nomination from the party they get Secret Service protection, but I didn't know they did it for just those campaigning.

They ask for, and got, protection early! Something about a vast right wing conspiracy

He is also a Senator, so maybe they get some protection as well? I don't know, I haven't studied the ins and outs of Secret Service protection since they won't be escorting me around.

I did some digging and found this:

The Secret Service is authorized by law to protect:
  • The president, the vice president, (or other individuals next in order of succession to the Office of the President), the president-elect and vice president-elect
  • The immediate families of the above individuals
  • Former presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes, except when the spouse remarries. In 1997, Congressional legislation became effective limiting Secret Service protection to former presidents for a period of not more than 10 years from the date the former president leaves office
  • Children of former presidents until age 16
  • Visiting heads of foreign states or governments and their spouses traveling with them, other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States, and official representatives of the United States performing special missions abroad
  • Major presidential and vice presidential candidates, and their spouses within 120 days of a general presidential election
  • Other individuals as designated per Executive Order of the President
  • National Special Security Events, when designated as such by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security
However...a candidate can request protection based on series of standards, including public prominence as measured by polls and fundraising.

Thing about all this is...Obama has received his protection in May 2007, earlier than any other presidential candidate (Hillary was already protected by her former First Lady status).

I flew into Vegas the night Obama was leaving from Atlantic Aviation and yes there was Local Police/Sheriff and Secret Service all over the place and they all had their game faces on. If I remember correctly they had 3 or 4 vehicles all parked right in front of the door to the FBO on the rampside. By the time we got out of our plane he was already on his so I didn't get to see him in person.

Obama asked for and received early Secret Service protection because of threats against him. His campaign (Rightly) feels that as the first viable African-American candidate, he his obviously a target.

This is honestly something that really worries me about Obama. All of our great leaders (MLK, JFK, RFK...) who commanded change and changed our country for the better have been gunned down in their prime...

That'll buff right out......

The Gulfstream doesn't look too bad. The Van on the other hand....New aileron, and a hammer will do the trick.

Unfortunately, that looks like some pretty serious damage to the wing of the Caravan. Looks like it might have damaged at least, one if not more of the ribs. Sad for Airnet, but that airplane won't be flying for a while.

Eh that would be on the CDL list.

Its a van, it'll fly

As a wise man one said:
Sumb!tch flew in, Sumb!tch'll fly out.
It flew into Midway
(see sig)

Lets see:
Quote:
79-8 Wings

If leading edge is not damaged:

No more than a 3 (three) foot section span wise may be damaged.
Such damage must not protrude more than 1/8 (.125) inches into the airflow r recessed into the wing.
No more than 1 (one) rib may have damage, and the rib/spar junction must be undamaged

Trailing edge devices must not have damage that is more than 1/8 (.125) inches either into the airflow or recessed into the device. There is no span wise restriction.
I'm still going with the new aileron and a hammer

Actually I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Well it looks like there in one Circumferential rivet line that is damaged, might mean there is a rib there that is busted. Ehhh, who freaking knows? I bet it would still fly fine with a new aileron and a hammer though

I am glad you would be fine with a new aileron and a hammer job

I wouldn't be, especially if I knew the airplane had a busted rib or two that had not been repaired. Nobody will know for sure until the covers are removed and the damage is thoroughly inspected.

Just throwing this out there as food for thought:

Quote:

CFR 14 Part 43
43.13 (b) Each person maintaining or altering, or performing preventive maintenance, shall do that work in such a manner and use materials of such a quality, that the condition of the aircraft, airframe, aircraft engine, propeller, or appliance worked on will be at least equal to its original or properly altered condition (with regard to aerodynamic function, structural strength, resistance to vibration and deterioration, and other qualities affecting airworthiness).
Furthermore...

Quote:
79-8 Wings

Looks like close to three feet of the trailing edge (where aileron attaches) is damaged in some form or another.

And considering the fact that the rear spar is right in front of the aileron, there might be damage at the rib/spar junction.

This is just all food for thought. I would love to hear what someone with experience in structural repair thinks.

I was using a bit of

The only way you will be able to tell is by peeling the skin away. It's going to have to be replaced anyway (the skin). If the spars are not damaged, it will be a relatively minor repair. (as minor as plane vs plane contact is going to be).
