In my ongoing search for a flight school, I came across Rison Aviation in El Cajon, just a little outside San Diego. I've emailed the owner a couple times and he's been helpful in answering questions regarding training, but does anyone here have any firsthand experience? They have a career package in a Cessna 150 that will take you from PPL-MEI for about $33,000 or $38,000 in a Piper Cherokee. The course prices are fixed and include all materials and checkride fees. There are only about 15 hours of ME time included, but that's the only negative I see at this point. The price looks great, but I'd like to get more info regarding the quality of training. Thanks Here's the website: http://www.risonav.com/packages.html |

I've never heard of Rison. They must be new to the airport. Gillespie is an awsome airport to learn to fly at though. I got my private at CFA which is also at the base of the tower back in 02'. At the time, they were a good company. Its been a few years, so I don't know how they are now. Just stay away from Golden State. They'll rip you off in a heartbeat. As far as Rison is concerned, it seems like a nice little school. They don't advertise a multi engine aircraft on the website, and the prices they quote don't include one either. Thats something you might want to look in to (if you haven't already).

Have you looked at Sheble's in Arizona? http://www.shebleaviation.com/ You can get all you ratings for about $22,000. Housing is $30/night which is most likely less than anything you will find in San Diego. I was based at Gillespie for 5 years. It is a great airport, but it has gotten much busier recently with the influx of foreign students training there. It is not uncommon to have 4 planes in the pattern and the tower on split frequencies. Not the best environment for primary training IMHO. Another option possibly is First Flight at Brown Field - http://www.firstflightcorp.com/ Get the PPL there and the rest at Shebles's. They have a nice Grumman AA1 for $63/hr as well as a 172 for $75/hr. It is not nearly as busy as MYF or SEE plus there is a 8000 foot runway which is confidence inspiring.
