To fly for the regionals and/or majors, is it a must have ATP or does it depend on the airlines and their requirment? What about cargo carriers? I guess anything above the private you are obviously flying in a commercial status while operating multi-engine turbine, correct?

class 3 for recreational flying, class 2 for commercial pilots operating for compensation or hire and class 1 for airline transport pilots acting as pilot in command in multi crew operations. longevity.... under 40, 36 calendar months. Over 40. 24 calendar months.

Above the Private Pilot license comes the instrument rating, you are not a commercial pilot yet. Commercial comes after Instrument (Well at least that is the norm) and when you get your multi you can add commercial priviledges to it.
You don't have to have an ATP to fly for the regionals or the majors. Look at regionals right now, a lot of people are getting hired at ages below 23 (Which is a minimum to hold an ATP license). It is doable at the majors too but very hardly, most have their ATPs before going for the majors.
Let me remind you that ATPw or the written exam at least is a must for all majors and most regionals.
