| Agent Smith | True story. There's a guy who was just offered an interview at a major. Didn't have all the time in the world on his resume, but went to a prestigious non-aviation university, did extra-curricular activities, some high profile, and the manager of pilot selection absolutely ate it up. For the most part, as long as you have a four year degree, you're golden. But sitting there across the desk from the manager of pilot selection applaud his collegiate pedigree and performance, I need to spend some time and amend my viewpoint.

| Old Skool | From what I have heard, Airline pilots are gonna be one of the last vocational type trades to require a four year degree. Alot of trades are just gonna require the training, and yet they start making more than pilots .

To say someone who didn't go to college or didn't graduate can't talk about anything intelligent or anything but airplanes is generalizing & like all generalizations is usually incorrect.

| Agent Smith | Dear Ms. MQAAORD; How do you get a persistent grease stain off of fabric? Am I hosed? Signed, Doug T. Scottsdale, AZ (seriously!)

| Old Skool | Ok those who are young (of college age) who don't have degrees, usually don't have much to say about things other than flying airplanes.

| Agent Smith | Airplane grease? Au contraire! I pride myself with two walkarounds per month! Nah, I think it's food grease I didn't know it was there, washed it and discovered it after pulling it out of the dryer.(Sorry about the 'thread creep', folks, but it's one of my few long-sleeve shirts and I'm off to "sunny" Deustchland this weekend)

| Moderator | For food grease stains I recommend Biz. Put some liquid Biz directly on the stain, rub it in, let it sit and soak in for a while, then wash as usual with your usual detergent AND Biz in the cycle. I like Biz.

Once the dryer gets a hold of the stain....kiss the garment buh-bye! Then again, what do I know? I only have an Associates degree and decades of life experience. ![]()

| The social stigma in the US that college is a MUST is just a way to fuel the academic economy. Nothing I learned at Cornell about Psychology, WWII History, Wines, etc etc etc, is going to make me a better pilot than the next guy. But Doug just confirmed the hypocritical part of it all; Get a prestigious degree and surely you must be a better pilot than the guy/gal that does not! |

You kinda of answered the question of why a degree...It is not so much what your degree is in, but that you have a degree. The degree proves (for the most part) the ability to learn. It doesn't have to be a 'prestigous' degree, but you do need to be able to check that box. When an employer has X amount of openings and X*2 the number of applications for said openings you have to be able to narrow it down. This just happens to be the way that many have chosen to narrow that field. That being said, does not having a degree mean you cannot learn? Absolutely not.

| THAT is the problem! I wish I could have done more extra curricular activities. I did in High School. I did in the AF too. But see, Ivy league schools cost Ivy league money. Well I was just some poser so I had to drive an 18-wheeler to NYC 4 times a week, and full-time when college was out, just to pay for it all and not end up in huge debt; I hear debt is bad . Then my GPA suffered because I did not have the same amount of time to study as people with a "paid for" ride. I am not bitter. I got the piece of paper. It got me a nice paying job I guess. I just think there is a sad part of hypocrisy in it all.In other developed countries I have visited, degrees are attained mainly to help a person develop within a certain career. Here, very few people actually progress within the career they major in. |

| No, I'm not even going to bother with you. I'll wait until I can make it to one of the "meet-and-greets" and tell you what I think of you to your face.

Shout Ultra Gel. Soak in hot water. Wash twice if needed. A good scrub with the gel and a long soak goes a long way. It's not always 100%, but it gives you a fighting chance. I've saved a few shirts.
