Default How long should it take to do a Nav Log?

I was just curious how long it should take to do a Nav Log. I know that some may very because of distance and waypoints/fixes. It usually takes me a good 45 min. to an hour. But I really take my time to make sure everything is correct. My instructor thinks it should take only 15 minutes or so. Is that about right? Thanks for the input.

However long it takes to get it right. You'll take a long time when you first start but the more and more you do it, the faster you'll get.

Even short flights should take more than 15 mins.

Short as in the generic >50nm XC trip.

Weather information gathering, plotting your course, filling out the nav log (making calculations) - the end.

For a simple, one leg, 50nm trip I'd say no more than 30-45 mins.

Takes about 3 minutes on Aeroplanner.com. And that includes 2 minutes of surfing for porn.

It takes my guys almost an hour to do a flight from HEF - CHO which is a very short flight. I sometimes wonder "what the hell are they doing that is taking so long?" but then I have to remember that I can tell you where CHO is when we are only 1000' in the air off of HEF, since I go there all the time. When you first start out it will take awhile, then you will get good at it, then you will realize the online planners that take seconds. Then you go onto IFR training and you dont have to plan much

Then youll go back to commercial training and have to re-remember how to do a VFR flight plan and feel really stupid

Sounds about right, there is a big ammount of information you have to digest especially when flying to places you have not been to before. As you get more familiar with the process and do it more reguararly, your speed will pick up too.

for me? I just did a BHB-MLT-PWM-BHB (over 200 miles) one in less than 15 minutes. I could do a BHB-AUG-BHB one in about 5 now. The more you do them the faster you'll be.

Of course teaching them takes a while longer.

When you first start out its going to take a while to do it and a lot of instructors forget that they were once the same way. After a while specially when your building alot of x-country time you will be doing them in 5-10 minutes since by then you figure out whats important and whats not.

FltPlan.com, best thing since sliced bread. All the frequencies you'll need, including the FBOs as well as gov't preferred routes and commonly used user routes. Weather links and charts too. Another good way to figure out the routing to file is to look at FlightAware's IFR Route Analyzer. I'm all about getting that "cleared as filed" from ATC.
