| Old Skool | Could this drop be attributed to technolgy and/or training that was unavailable before. Pilot error rate ‘significantly declined’ Accident rate remains stable, but pilots’ mistakes dropped 40 percent Pilot error is probably much less of a factor in mishaps involving U.S. airliners now than it was in the early 1980s, a new study suggests. The study, by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, discovered that the number of U.S. airline accidents due to pilot error "significantly declined" between 1983 and 2002. Although the overall rate of U.S. airline accidents remained stable throughout the period, the proportion of mishaps involving pilot error decreased 40 percent, they found. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22452005/

| Interesting piece. I'd be curious to see the same research criteria applied to the GA sector as well.

| If you can send a text message while driving down the highway, you can fly today's airplanes. A Captain said this to me yesterday - " The Operator commands the dog to work. The dog does the work. The Dog bites the operator when he issues the wrong command, yet the operator feeds the dog." I probably botched that up, but something like that. |

| yeah thanks Bob. since no one here knows how many i was thinking except for you and me, and obviously the one marine here, why don't you fill them in on the number of 500 hour pilots were hired from from 1983 to 2002.

Most jobs are "easy" when you're a professional. Writing an application for a arrest warrant is "easy" if you're on a fugitive task force while others may struggle. Conducting out-patient surgery is "easy" when it's your forte. I'm not saying this is rocket science, but give yourself a little credit !

These stats are not surprising at all to me. I've seen the changes since the 70s and everything is better. Especially the training and the procedures. Today's low-time wonders are much better than yesterday's were.

Well, thank you for giving some credit! ![]() My point was that as technology increases, so does the margin of safety. For example, I've rode JS on a few of today's newer jets lately. A lot of the stuff was foreign to me (being a prop driver), but operating the aircraft just seemed safer. The workload was less, situational awareness thanks to the new technology was greatly enhanced. Being able to visually SEE what is going on with each and every system, to have at your fingertips page after page of information from navigation to aircraft troubleshooting is tremendously beneficial to safety. Now I am in no means saying that us TP drivers are any less safe. The Beech 1900 is a great airplane in the sense that its forgiving. But I feel that in the 1900 if we as a crew are lazy, tired or fatiqued, the airplane will bite you. With the "newer" technology, you have a few things that just might save your ass when you need it most. Still no excuse for flying fatigued, but lets face it, at a Non Union carrier, you're job is at risk for making that phone call.

On a serious note, can a serious person tell me where I would be able to find stats on regional pilots average hours throughout the 90's?

| How bout instead of knocking each other about the low time vs. high time usual banter, we think up creative ways for us the pilot group as a whole to get more money and better QOL. If you talkin bout money homie now ya talkin...

| lol. i guess man. just seems stupid to me i point out the study has nothing to with safety in regards to low time guys getting hired after 2002 and i get ridiculed with crypic answers which mean nothing and jeering backhanded replies to logic. someone talk about pay

| Moving on from all that, why do unions end up voted down? You hear it a lot that a pilot group turns it down. Is it due to fear of the company or something else?
