| Junior Member | A plane preparing for take off at Kansas City International Airport skidded off the runway Sunday morning. It happened when United Airlines flight 163 bound for Denver just left the departure gate, turned onto a surface road, and skidded off the runway into a grassy patch around 6:30 a.m., officials said. No injuries were reported. All 182 passengers onboard the aircraft were taken off the plane and returned to the terminal. http://news.yahoo.com/s/kmbc/20071230/lo_kmbc/14947412

| Old Skool | Wait...the United flight turned onto a surface road...but then skid of the runway!? How'd it get from the surface road to the runway...and why was it on a surface road!?

| Senior Member | Very interesting. I guess I'm a little at a loss here, it didn't snow last night or this morning, and yesterday was a nice sunny day. Why do the pictures I've seen of this show the aircraft on a snowy, barely cleared surface? Now when I landed on Thursday at IXD the runway looked like that, which was a wonderful addition to my approach after shooting the ILS at damn near minimums ! |

| Senior Member | The plane never made it to the runway, it had just pushed and was taxiing to the runway when it turned onto a service road instead of a taxiway. |

| I gotta wonder how many accidents or even incidents are caused by the 200 hour pilot sitting in the cockpit.

| I was just in MCI a few days ago. THey had to shut down 19R/1L to clear out the snow. There was snow all over the ramp and taxiways. We really had to be careful when taxiing. At least 19L/1R was clear. Almost reminds me of CLE. ![]()

| Boy these low time pilots sure are making lots of mistakes these days. ![]() Seems like, as always, a lack of diligence is what causes more incidents than any other reason. |

| Old Skool | I think it's a lot easier to slide off a runway than it might seem. I haven't driven one of these things yet, but trying to figure out how to get a couple of thousand pounds of thrust and a 6" nose wheel to do what you want doesn't seem too easy.

| You don't think low time pilots at the Regional Airlines where the Captain has to basically act as a CFI is dangerous at all?

| I bet the service road crumbled under the weight - my mum was on a DC-10 which did a similar stunt. I would imagine finding the airport is easier than taxiing around some of them. |
