If AE were to give someone LAX as a domicile, could they be on reserve out of SJC or do they have to be 2hrs out of LAX?

If you were awared LAX, you would be reserve out of LAX. Where you live and how you get there would be up to you.

I understand but for example, who gets to fly out of SJC? Are there any pilots that live in the Bay Area and fly those early flights from San Jose? Is that something that you bid?

Heard that LAX and MIA are no longer being offered to AE new hires, just ORD, DFW, and SJU?

Would someone please inform me about reserve and how it works? I should change my SN to "a million questions", but how does the new hire process actually work? Just a scenario, say I was hired on with AE, and my domicile was ORD, but I live in CLT, do I continue to live in CLT and commute to ORD, or do I have to relocate closer to ORD? What are you supposed to due on Reserve? Thanks for the help.

at AE when you are on reserve you still get 11 days off a month that are usually either 2 or 3 days off in a row. You can still live in CLT if you want to but you might have to travel up to ORD on your day off. As you get more senior on reserve you can bid either for open trips or ready reserve that has a late start in the day. So that way you can travel up to ORD the morning you start work instead of the day before. I live in NY and was based in SJU for a year and was able to do this. I was only on reserve for about 2 months and only had to commute to work the days before maybe 3 or 4 times but I was really lucky and the JFK-SJU flights you never had to compete for the jumpseat.

Since SJC is an outstation, I'm assuming that the early morning flights are flown by the crew that flew in the night before. That's simply where they overnight.

I've seen the lines for LAX on AE and I think I can answer this question.

SJC is actually considered a hub for AE operations, which means alot of flight originate there, but it is NOT a crew base.

ie, there are no reserve times there. Reserves are all within 2 hrs recall of LAX. Being in SJC when you're on reserve in LAX wouldn't work. By all practical intents, there's no way you can sit reserve in SJC.

I am not suggesting changing the entire system, but why not have pilots based at (for example) SJC even if it is not a crew base? There are flight on the hour all day out of there and it would be less expensive for the company(no hotel/P/D bills), more convenient and more of an 8-5 job for the pilots?

To answer the question.

SJC is a HUB... not a crew base.

ie, it's in the performance manual as a hub airport, or a center focus in the hub and spoke system.

No pilots are actually based there- they overnight there in the middle of a trip that originated in LAX.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion.
