I'd say it doesn't matter. Whatever you prefer.

I did my private, instrument, commerical, and multi add on in round dial. When I moved to the G1000 for my CFI course, I remember thinking what a joke it was. If you want to be a better pilot, go with the round dial. My students get the moving map twice... when I show them the GPS OBS mode (late in the course) and for the checkride. In the sim, the AHRS, GPS (therefore DME), and one of the screens will be failed. Then they can actually figure it out. I just wish that damn thing wouldn't give a wind vector while in reversionary mode. +1 for the stick, btw... |

| LOL . . . this is true. I suck! ![]() It's weird having more flight time than most of my Captains. In fact, all but 3 of the Captains I've flown with . . .

| Old Skool | Hows about my CFII ride, and it was a true fed as I did my CFII as initial. But I wasn't a hack and knew how to fly without the thing. |

They haven't, but that's not the issue that's being discussed here. Do you have much experience trying to train folks at an air carrier from glass to round dials or vise versa?

This thread has a lot of CV about why steam is good and glass training is bad and yes, that argument about turning off GPS is one of the more bogus ones. To current plan to back up a system wide failure of gps is e loran, not ADF... I just dont buy any of the bs dissing the Garmin. It can and should be taught initially using only the PFD without using the proc key. if an instructor teaches a student to fly an approach using a moving map, then he has no biz in the biz. Pretty much all GA aircraft are coming out with glass now, so hopefully the FITS programs come up to speed. There are arguments to both sides, and "do you have" well poisoning tactic is a little uncalled for, no? | |
