Probably like everyone else, I've been to sites like "APC" and looked at the pay scales for pretty much every airline and tried to guestimate what a 'potential salary' would be should you land such a gig -- according to equipment, position and year of course. My question is, does anyone have any 'links' or info as to the pay rates prior to September 11th? I very well may be showing my ignorance in regards to the pay structure (and how they have/or have not changed), but my impression was that the wages were higher prior to that eventful day. Now, whether the airlines used that event as a scapgoat for years and years of lousy managerial practices is not the question. I'm just curious what the payscales were like then, compared to where they are now...?? Did a 5 year FO on the MD88 at Delta, in 1999, make $84 an hour as they do today? (ref. APC.com) ......Inflation.....Oil.......Operating on a thin margin.......A never ending race to the bottom of the seniority list.....What a great industry....... |

A five year -88 F/O made around $135 per hour.

Yeah, that's about where I thought it was. Referencing another thread that was recently posted (pilot mag. article) - this thing has gotta change. I'm, like many others, one of those guys that's trying to weigh the opportunity cost of chasing this career. Accept a 70k job right now (probably capped at 115k or so) or go after the 'golden egg' that may end up grossing me 150k+ - but only after numerous years (10+???). Further, it's far from a guarentee you'll ever land such a gig. Let the record show, money was not and is not the reason I spent 40 grand on flight training. I love it. However, 'loving' something doesn't pay the mortgage. Or, in my case, the aspiration to have a mortgage. |
