Private Military Contract flying?

Does anyone have any info on PMC fixed-wing flying?

-Job openings?

-How to land a job like this?

-Flight requirements?

-You or someone you know have any experience flying for a PMC?

I am very interested in this type of flying and humanitarian efforts. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a few connections with a company that does "crop-dusting" for the military. Mostly in places like Columbia and Afghanistan. To get on doing that you have to have dusting experience and a few hundred hours taildragger time. Pay is... well, the first $75,000 is tax free! He works 17 on 11 off.

There is a company in FL called Air Scan, Inc that does surveillance (sp?) in foreign lands for the military. They fly some sort of twin and I think their requirements are 2000 TT, 1000 ME or something. I saw it posted on a website a couple of months ago. They paid daily between $300 and $600. It was a 30 on 30 off rotation.

If you're interested in humanitarian efforts, I'd suggest looking towards NGO's, and not private military companies.

Non-Governmental Organizations, or, NGA's, Non-Governmental Agencies.

I have a serious personal issue with countries trying to privatize essential government functions, to include outsourcing the military.

But, do as you wish.

Airscan flys Adams Aircraft twins. Most of those jobs go to USAF spec ops types. I could tell you more but then I'd have to kill you.

There are many other places that do military contract flying outside of drug eradication in Columbia.

Blackwater flies cargo into Forward Operating Bases in Afghanistan/Iraq. Think of it as Ameriflight but with much better pay.

There are companies like Phoenix Air (think they might have gone out of business?) that are radar target tugs for fighter training. Some contractor -- may be L3/Vertex or DynaCorp -- flies MU-2s down at Tyndall AFB so the F-15 students can practice intercepts.

Some company that owns a Saab Viggen contracts it out as an electronic warfare trainer for fighters, too.

Lots of different things out there, you just have to know where to look for the jobs. USUALLY they hire ex-mil guys, but not all the time.

I was interviewing with a company that flew kingairs and was looking for pilots in "western asia."

Generally a decent amount of flight time in the same or similiar aircraft, some previous military time may be desirable but its not required, some similiar job experience(in my case air medevac and aerial survey) and a gung-ho attitude. Pay was great---17K a month. 90 days on/ 90 days off and I think it would have been a blast to do but ultimatly decided against it for the time being.

The nice thing is that generally your not competing against real high time guys for this job. 2000 - 3000 hours seems par for the course. AirScan wants 1,000 hours piston twin because thats what they operate.

However these are not humanitarian efforts. There are many companies that hire pilots to come to Africa or S. America etc... to fly for a year but I'm not familiar with any directly. Look around and keep searchin youll find it.

My wet dream would be to get on with East Corp, or Dyn Corp and do Drug eradication in Collumbia and Peru. Would love to fly the armoured Air Tractor 802. Anybody that has done this, or knows someone who has done this, shoot me a PM. Thanks.

Airscan does not fly Adams Aircraft Twins. Also, most of these jobs do not go to USAF sepc ops types.

I interviewed with Airscan a while back. Seems like a good bunch of people but better pay and equipment to be had elsewhere.

It very well may have been in the past. I know that they still use Bronco's for something, and it may still have a roll in spraying. The advent of the Air Tractor AT-802, with an 800 gallon hopper has made this an airplane of choice for this mission I believe. That airplane is also the primary S.E.A.T. tanker that is in heavy use in the west - a truly remarkable airplane. One of our fellow JC'ers (T-Cart) has time in an AT-802 and his impressions are awesome. I saw a picture of one once and will try to retrieve it for you - menacing looking bird - instead of the normal bright yellow with blue stripe (for visability) these are pained black, and have armour plating. Pretty neat.

I've been considering at least looking into something like this (like dynamic) as of late... the flying would be fun and I couldn't complain about the money. My question: How does the pay work for the off months? Do most of these companies pay when you're working and not when you're at home? Or pay you all months regardless? Thanks!

For humanitarian stuff try Mission Aviation Fellowship. They prefer turboprop time ,that you have an A&P, and that you speak another language. If you have have those three they want 400+ with 50+ high performance, think they're willing to compromise on the language . If you don't they want at least 1000.

They are also a "multi-faith" Christian Missionary group; which may break the deal for some people.
