Default More Questions

Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while.

1. How many hours do you need to be a captain for SkyWest?

2. How many hours will I get if I go to a non-aviation college?

1) it doesnt really matter as they arent hiring street captains. If upgrade is happening fast enough that you wont have the time before you can hold it then its probably a good idea that you'll be spending more time in the right seat.

2) ...

Lets start by saying that I don't work for an airline; I don't even have my private yet, but as I have no life and I stalk these forums, I could probably answer your questions...from one noob to another.

1. Generally speaking, you are hired at an airline as an FO. Upgrade to captain is based on seniority at the company. If you are next on the list to upgrade and a CA spot is open, you're their guy. If i'm not mistaken, you need 1000 hours total time to get an FAA issued ATP certificate which is a requirement for the rank of captain (this is where real pilots chime in if i'm wrong_. So, to answer your question, you would need 1000 hourse, however, at most airlines, you would reach 1000TT before you are eligible for upgrade.

2. Not sure exactly what you mean by this. If you go to a typical university that does not include flight training into its curriculum then you're on your own to do your flight training. You'll have to find an FBO in the area and work your flight training around classes. I didn't fly at all during college, but the way my classes were spaced out, I bet i could have flown twice/week during my freshman year and 3-4times/week during my sophomore-senior years, just because in the later years you have flexibility in your schedule. So to answer this question, you can get as much flight training as you're willing to work for at a "non-aviation college"

and if you're wondering why nick responded to me before I posted, its because i deleted this twice because of premature postaculation issues

Well, it sounds like you have a little way to go before you need to think about upgrades, but here ya go

2500TT and 1000 hours 121 crew time are the mins.

1) welcome to jetcareers
2) I went to a non-aviation school and had more hours when I finished college than those that went to an aviation related school. As a matter of fact my first job (the day after I graduated college) as a CFI was to finish a guy who went to Riddle and get him his CFI

As for the original second question, I am a huge proponent of a non-aviation degree and even a non-aviation school. It worked out great for me thus far and I will have some things to fall back on. To each his own, but you need to decide for yourself. My path?

1) PPL during high school and college
2) 4 year college with a B.A. in Criminal Justice
3) Went to a big academy for about 8 months after college (left after being dissatisfied....should have found JC first!)
4) Moved to Colorado on a whim and found a superior flight school to finish my CFI
5) Taught for 3 years (plenty of hours...could have left CFI'ing much earlier, chose not to)
6) Came to SkyWest

I know everyone here has done it million different ways, but this worked for me. Hope this helps.
