| This was in the news last week in the Bay Area, 14 new hires have quit at Oakland Tracon, making me think twice... the 10 hour days 6 days a week sounds too brutal even for 60k in the first year! http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?sec...cal&id=5652922 |

| Old Skool | Well, there is no such thing as Oakland TRACON . . .it's Norcal Tracon. Unless of course, you meant Oakland ARTCC? Furthermore, they are not the only facility with newbies running for the door(s) after a few weeks. But, hey, glad you see it, and I'm glad news outfits are starting to provide more news on the subject. Sad part, is that there are enough guys and gals out there who - much like another area of this industry - don't care, and just want the job. No matter what the cost is on the profession. |

| I heard that report Friday morning as I was driving to work. In that report, they kept bringing up the cost of living in the Bay Area, and how they couldn't make it here on that salary. |

| Old Skool | That would probably be it. They can go work a tower in someplace like BTM and live like kings!

| Velocipede - Part of me would rather be poor and living in downtown San Francisco than rich in Butte, Montana. ![]()

| No Nick, the true meaning of contentment is living at Sierra Academy, in Atwater, like a Prince. |

| Old Skool | I'm all for getting ATC pay rates up back up to the A scale, or better. We talked bout this last week over on that "other" site. And a controller at the NorCal location stated that the couple in the article were both making $60k. So that's $120k combined, and you're tellin me they couldn't live on that salary in SF. I understand that they were promised more, and I be pissed too, if the company didn't keep their word, hell I'd probably leave too. I more or less just want confirmation that $120k is unliveable in the Oakland/SF area, cause if so...damn! Other than that, get the pay and work rules back where they need to be for our valuable ATC peeps! |

| You can live on $96k in Oakland. A nice condo is $2k a month, you'd still have $3k a month for car, food, etc..... |

| Max, 2 people can easily live on $120K here. If they can't, they have financial issues, and better learn not to spend, spend, spend. I'm all for ATC getting their deserved pay, and reduced hours though. Where can I sign a petition for them? |

| Junior Member | Hmmm, I was making ends meet as a single parent in Oakland on just less than $40k/year in 2005. It's not impossible. Anyone who makes more than that and complains needs to quit whining and be thankful they make what they do! K

| Old Skool | Alright guys. . . I don't think they are complaining about the cost of living in the area. Let's not blur that line. They are complaining, and rightfully so, because the FAA has reneged on what they said years ago would be wages, and then go and change them to save a buck. The FAA says that they did this to bring controller wages in line with other FAA employees. But you know what - don't think for a second that a controller's job is anywhere near as relaxing as any other FAA employee's job. Skycougar, you can visit www.natca.org for more information. Calling you elected federal officials would also do wonders. |

That's why I asked if there was any petition or anything else the public can do. Taking the story to the public and educating the masses is a good thing. Pilots should do the same. Having that story blast across the Bay Area radio waves during rush hour was a good thing for the cause - people heard it. | |
