| Old Skool | The bill that included increasing the retirement age of airline pilots from 60 to 65 was passed today by the Senate. Once the President signs it, the FAA will have 30 days to implement it. More time at the regionals! YIPPE KAY YAY! ![]()

| Old Skool | Sucks. But I'm not so sure that it will mean more time at the regionals for everyone. But *some* will remain in the minor leagues longer than they would had 65 not been signed into law. I'm sure many will both try to get out at 60, or medical out. With some staying till 65! But...what do I know!? |

| I saw that fast read. Interesting - it went thru so quick. Most of the hirings these days are for retirement, correct? So wouldn't that mean most of the hiring at the major level would slow?

| Old Skool | Grrr. There goes the hiring for a while. I'm sure the number of guys who have to drop out because of their medical will go up a bunch, but the machine is defiantly going to slow down for a few years. |

| Old Skool | Who the **** knows what this is going to do long term, but it will slow things down short term. Majors could offer early retirements because they don't want to pay those top salaries for five more years. The other thing that it can do is guys that are sitting left seat at regionals that are in their mid thirties MIGHT be more reluctant to go to a major when the mass retirement boom happens in the years down the road. This sucks no doubt about it. We shall see what happens.

| Did they ever decide if this new limit was going to be grandfathered? That would hurt a bit more. |

| Old Skool | 99% sure it will NOT be gandfathered to already retired pilots

| Senior Member | Not sure about being grandfathered, but for the guys at the companies with engineer panels on some of the equipment who went to the back seat instead of retiring are good to go back to the front.....

| Old Skool | Hence the reason FedEx has been doing nil in the hiring dept. They had no idea what their staffing situation was going to be.

| Old Skool | See, I don't buy into that. I don't really WANT to work until I'm 65. If I can retire comfortably at 60 (or sooner), I'll probably do it.

| Old Skool | There are guys that had their pensions "frozen" at 52, basicly losing close to a million dollars, which is nearly all their retirement money and not have to build a "B plan" in 8 years. Many guys need to work to at least 62 to not need to move into trailer park when they retire. A lot of good pilots got screwed buy a corrupt MEC that had a scab as its leader.

| My prediction is that this will create a massive shortage 5 years from now. Who's gonna want to start flight training just to fill in for attrition at Mesa? I don't know much, but it seems like they are just throwing on a band-aid to the real problem.

| Hey, I'm not trying to be defiant. I just don't want to have to retire at 60.

Not that I'm in the business anymore, but I, sir, would want the OPTION and not be FORCED to go home at 65. Unless of course your REAL objection is "oh but it's going to take me time to get SENIOR!" (That is the definition of seniority ha ha)

| Old Skool | My only issue has been you were forced at 60, but no able to recieve your Social Security yet. While not much, it is something that you had been paying into for some time. Still not sure if I like 65 of not, and I'm one hoping to get into the game late. |

| Pension/401K's will be the deciding factor for most. If things are lined up to retire at 60, then most probably will. And I agree with the post that the airlines can always offer 'enhanced retirement packages' to get rid of the high end salaries. Also, I've been reading that the private and corporate/charters will grow due to the numerous delays and security issues when flying the airlines. |

| Hell. If I could afford to retire at 35, I would. But no one should be forced to do anything merely because they've hit a "magic" number on the calendar. If a pilot can pass a 1st class medical and pass PCs, there's no good reason to require that they retire.

| Junior Member | I'd venture the majority of retirees were "ready" to go at 60 and this is really for those few who either still have it in them and are stubborn or got really screwed as of late and need that plan B. If this does get signed I would still want out early as possible as long as it was feasible. Save that 15% and don't get married that is my plan! |
