| Junior Member | So ANOTHER pilot who is a friend of the first one I spoke with who is Pro ATP and against the FBO route wrote this reply to my question. --------------------------------- This is what I asked: I talked to your buddy ---- and he is supportive of ATP, but sinc then I have decided to go the FBO route. Find a nice little pilot school with some good CFI's and a plane to get some multi experience. Have any advice? -------------------------------- This is what he wrote: FBO route is alright I guess, I have some friends that did it and are both airline pilots now. One was a flight school wash-out which was a problem for him when he was training for the airlines. Not that they care as much but that he was not used to the fast paced training and lacked alot of knowledge which is very typical of part 61 trained pilots. The airlines tend to lean towards flight school potentials vs. part 61 pilots. Basically they will lean towards me being an SIU pilot than a higher timed 61 pilot. Good CFI's are out there but now so many are at the airlines, and I know of no FBO's for you. Just google it and I am sure there are alot. Benefits of a 61 is you work at your own pace and it is typically cheaper. Maybe look into SIU or Uof i or Lewis -------------- What do you guys think?

| I majored in Elementary Education and went the FBO route. I was offered a job after every interview. We had several instructors at my FBO who went to the ATP Accelerated CFI courses and they weren't sharp at all. My CFI course was very thorough, I don't know how they can cover all that material in a 1 week course. I just don't think it's possible. I would stay away from an aviation degree. The industry is bound to crap out again sooner or later and it might be nice to have something to fall back on if you're out on the street.

| I've met several people who fly at ATP, some of them I wouldn't let near my cockpit. Over the summer I met a hotshot ATP pilot who was Gods Gift to aviation. It turns out when you're Gods Gift you don't have to listen to more experienced pilots because its cool to crash an airplane right? Well, he didn't listen and he planted the plane he was supposed to deliver right at the end of the runway. Total hull loss and he's lucky he's still alive.

| rayray - by now I think you might be figuring out that there are a whole lot of ways to skin the aviation cat, as it were. there are a lot of very good pilots who have trained in a variety of ways. there are some lousy ones out there who also trained the same ways. the point is that it depends mostly on you and how committed to excellence you are in your flying. one other thing - just because you pick one route doesn't mean you have to stick to it. it's your money. if a flight school doesn't work out, you can always switch to fbo and vice versa.

If my advice that I gave to you in confidence was publicly posted for everyone to ridicule and nitpick... then I wouldn't feel so good about it giving it to you again in the future. After all... you are saying that these guys are "friends" of yours. What is their reaction to you putting their e-mails up on the board for everyone make snide comments at? Bob

| Dude, just go to ATP already and get a job with an Airline within a year. Then come back on here and complain about the airlines like I do. See, I've solved your problem. That'll be $20 now. ![]()

| Old Skool | Here's the deal. The guys you're e-mailing aren't gonna make the decision. Those of us in JC aren't gonna make the decision. YOU are gonna have to pull that trigger. You've got two conflicting sets of information tossed your way. Granted, it seems the e-mail guys are a bit biased (BTW, hate to tell this new e-mail guy, but ATP *IS* Part 61), though. You're gonna have to make a decision based on information you've gathered. Right now, it just seems you're fishing until you get opinions that match up. It'll never happen in aviation. ![]()

dude im not angry....but i have to tell u...im not "fishing". i am gathering opinions and also doing research. whenever i post threads like these i get so many opinions but i also end up usually getting one or two great pieces of advice or something that helps me greatly. it could be something simple like somone referring me to a website that i would have never found on my own. everyones opinion is based on their own beliefs and experiences they have had in their own lives. i get that. i am a big believer in understanding that u should never take someones advice and do what they say. just take it and think about it. but, if i never joined JC and never posted all the threads i do i wouldnt be where i am today, which is FAR beyond where i was a year ago just looking at local flight schools websites and the academies also. so as far as im concerned i am always going to post questions and anything i am interested in because that is what these forums are about. getting peoples opinions, networking, making friends and opening up doors. this resource is amazing and i am just happy i am starting my new acreer in aviation in the computer age, because 15 years ago i would have been lost without resources like this forum. beyond that i still appreciate everyones opinion, harsh, mean, nice, advice etc. whatever.

| Junior Member | Well writing is in black and white and I know what I read. I am just defending myself and my actions. Which anyone would do if they were called out in public. And even selfless people make mistakes sometimes. He is completely open to his opinions, and I am completely open to rebuke them. That's the great thing about this forum and country.

| It really does come down to your commitment level, whichever route you go. I did some of both, the private in 61, a four year aviation degree, a big flight academy. The only thing the academy had an advantage in is total immersion. I had a group of friends, and we all started at the same time. We flew, hung out, worked out and got tanked together. We were tight, and all we did was talk flying. Half of what I learned was from the other people and the endless flying talk. It would be hard to find that at a 61 school. 61 has the advantage of a non cookie cutter approach. I can't tell you how many 141 pilots I've seen who can't execute a crosswind landing, but can burp the list of required IFR equipment. I would train at one and work at the other, get some of both. |

| Old Skool | I think this part 141 vs 61 argument is just as old as Boeing vs Airbus ![]()
