...you can hear the prop un-feather. ![]() However... All flight training for multi-engine instrument and commercial ratings are flown in a Beachcraft turboprop King Air 90. ---HOW EXPENSIVE IS THAT GONNA BE!

Ok I DO have to say... I NEVER used a VDP in the Chieftain and the Beech 99. I thought the whole idea was kind of silly, because in the Chieftain if you could see the runway, then you could land on it. Hell if you couldn't see it, you could probably STILL land on it. It wasn't until I got into a jet that I realized that if you went blowing past the VDP at MDA you were most likely hosed. |

![]() Even with my checkride tomorrow, I will still say. This whole VDP thing is over-complicated. Some people can talk allll they want about " . . . . blah blah blah", but it's silly. If you need to make a formula to decide whether or not you can land, you are silly.

I'll agree. . .VDP is silly. Although I understand it's purpose, I still find it very silly. Land if you can land, don't land if you can't land. If you make a ###### decision and try to land when you couldn't land. . .it's your ass. So, think smart, and quick. |

It was very common at my last two airlines to calculate VDP's. Of course we do VNAV descents now with DDA's, but on aircraft where that wasn't available, VDP's were very common. Often times your VDP is well in advance of your MAP and many MAP's aren't situated a a position at which to make a normal approach to landing from that point. I *think* the importance is that if you decide that you can't make the runway and you're past your MAP you're conducting a "rejected landing" as opposed to a missed approach which can REALLY complicate things when it's down to the wire. In my personal opinion, unless you're doing VNAV descents on non-precision approaches, the VDP can serve to be a good tool in a jet aircraft.

My understanding is that some folks tried to fly the 727 like that when it first came out and they had a rash of guys landing before the runway or running off the runway.

You could jam the props forward and more or less land on a flatbed truck with a 1900. But if you yank the power off and dive for the runway in a mad dog, you're in for a big surprise when you add power to arrest your rate of descent!

| Old Skool | He isn't, but he doesn't realize the sight picture difference that you're dealing with between a 172 and a jet. I used to be in his shoes too, now I know better. |
