| Old Skool | We sold the Apache last week. We're now without an aircraft so all my flying will be at work. Kind of an odd feeling as I've pretty much had access to a personal aircraft from just after my private certificate, or almost six years. In a couple years (after a house, etc.) I'll talk my brother/friend(s) into partnering on an a 182 or some single engine, straight leg aircraft. Having a personal aircraft is, yes, expensive but so very, very handy. Anyway just kind of sad to see the end of an 'era' so to speak. But, it has served it's purpose and of the biggest mistakes anyone can make is getting too attached to an aircraft. If anyone is conisdering buying an aircraft to obtain ratings/hours I completely endorse the idea. However, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Buy what you can afford, maintain it well and then after you're through with it, sell it. And, that, is pretty much the key when buying a personal aircraft: buy it with a single purpose in mind. Use the aircraft towards that purpose. If the purpose/mission changes, sell the aircraft and buy a different aircraft that is suitable for the new purpose.

| Same can be said for dogs, cats, wives, cars etc. But how could you not love the Apache? Just went back and looked at some of my comments in my logbook about it. What a great airplane.

| Old Skool | A Twin Star could be a good hook ... but ya know a nice 172 with a basic sixpack and a tricked out moving map GPS setup would be a good start too. Glass is great but I still believe in learning the basics and teaching people to be adaptable. In other words, learn to fly the aircraft you're actually flying then learn to fly the next one when you get to it. Old fashioned? Maybe. But it seems to work. Hell, it works(ed) for me.

Ours was/is such a nice bird too. It only had 2600TT on it when we bought it. They only built something like 40 more after ours. It was a "Super Custom" so it had the third window, fifth seat, dual generators, dual vac pumps, etc. I got my multi rating (at 42 hours TT) in it, did my initial Instrument Rating in it, my initial Commercial Rating and initial CFI in it. I put just over 500 hours on it flying it all over the state and literally across the country as did several 2,600 mile round-trip flights in it. I truly learned to fly in that airplane. It was a GREAT airplane and I will truly miss it. But that being said, for the type of pleasure flying we (my father, brother and I) will/would do now, it's just too much aircraft. Hence it's now no longer ours. ![]() I think I put a total of 16 hours on it over the last two years ... that's just murder on an aircraft.

| ![]() Hmm, I'm thinking Cirrus G3, Columbia 400, or Mooney Acclaim. All faster, better range, and less maintenance than most light twins. Better yet, J-3 baby!! ![]()

| I'm hoping to set up a timebuilding program with my PA23. We'll see how it goes. It's undergoing an annual and they have found "a few things". Even if it's a 5K annual, though, I could easily make that up by flying with guys looking for multi time. Long live the flying Potato....

![]() A friend of mine works for US and I guess a few of the pilots there started a flying club. He is wrapping up his PPL with one of the airbus captains. http://www.flyingclub.org/ I think when I get done with my ratings and I am back to work I may look into picking up a basic 172 and using it do some freelance instruction. | |

| Senior Member | I always thought Doug should open a JC flight school. If he had the capital to start a school like ATP was before they turned into pan-am I think the other schools would just close up shop.

| Agent Smith | What we ought to do is form an exploratory committee for those that are interested that live in the PRC/PHX/TUS area that would benefit from the idea. Perhaps debate aircraft types, base location, whether we're going to use it for time building, instruction or just leisure rental, etc.
