All I have heard so far is the the pilot that lost his life was 51. The other was 24. They initially said a father/son, but that was not correct.

RIP

Try http://www.airventure.org/2006/news/060719_warbird.html and http://www.thunderoverreno.com . Here is what the planes looked like in April. Tragic loss of man and machine.

That was horrible
Terrible to see when ANY plane crashes :/

I heard one was killed and the other survived.

Horrible accident.

Okay so what the hell happened? The guy on the right (rear) landed on top of the other airplane?

(I bet there is a thread about this . . .*sigh*)

In a formation landing, the rear plane is supposed to touch-down first.. That didn't happen here and you see what happened...

"Precious Metal" is not the "real" Precious Metal, Gerry Beck built this A model from PLANS and it was painted like Precious Metal for filming the movie "Thunder over Reno".

Airplanes are always replaceable. It's the people that aren't.

It looks like the P51D is salvagable.

Still though. Like previously mentioned, sad loss of life.

Actually, in a perfect formation landing, both aircraft touch down at exactly the same time. It just usually doesn't work out that way!

Well, to be technically correct, the Buccarelli Griffon-powered Precious Metal isn't the "real" Precious Metal either!

Yeh, you are right.. The lead just usually gives the wing a pretty good cushion.. It doesn't look like that happened in the video's..
