Does anyone do it? How easy is it? I currently live in base at DFW with Eagle and it is great not having to commute but I am thinking of possible moving to Portland in the next year or two for family reasons and then commuting to LAX. I would then join the ranks of the miserable commuters and wanted to get any advise on how my life would change. Thanks

| You might grow web feet and a desire to wear sandals in the rain. On the upside though, PDX has free Wi-Fi.

Alaska/Horizon have unlimited jumpseats. Also, UPS has an A300 with five jumpseats that operates into ONT each weekday.

Its actually an easier commute than PDX - SEA, if you can believe that. Alaska has non-stops to several Basin airports in addition to LAX. I haven't checked lately, but Horizon may be going PDX-LAX nonstop as well. They have several one stop choices. United and Southwest can get you there with one stop. If you want to get creative, you can go PDX-GEG-LAX on Horizon. Additionally, once you get to GEG, Xpressjet has a couple non-stops a day to ONT that are basicly empty. Best of luck!

| The SAAB which I could already hold a commutable line on and then they also have the ERJ which I am a few years away from even getting a slot on the FO list.

I just searched a flight search engine, Northwest, Alaska, United, American and Delta all fly the route direct - are you trying to avoid the legacy carriers?

| nope, just wondering how the commute would be since everyone always says to avoid commuting if possible.

I wouldn't move unless your wife is getting her dream job in Portland. Commuting blows, seriously. I did a 2-3 leg commute to New York for 8 months. It burned me out so I switched companies and now I have a one leg commute that is less than an hour flight. It still blows. At the very least you're looking at more time away from home since you're going to waste 3-6 hours on your commuting days, spend more money on parking at PDX and crashpad/hotel expenses, earn less money since you'll never pick up open time because you're away from home so much as is, and then the added stress of weather, flight cancellations, and competition for the jumpseat. People are serious when they tell you that "living in base makes this a whole different job."
