First Puke

I used to have kids barf all the time when I was flying the T-41 and T-3 in the AF. Funniest one was a kid who spewed about every flight. He had pretty much gotten over it (yeah... right) though, so he was continuing the program. We had done our time of aerobatics--no problem. We did our time in the pattern at the aux field--no problem. Then we're on the straight-and-level ride back to the home field when I notice him getting VERY quiet. He's REALLY trying not to hurl, because if he does, he's likely washed out of the program--so he doesn't grab a bag.

He kind of coughs, then puts his hand to his mouth, palm flat, and then blows chunks. He stream hits his hand, then turns into a 360 disk of Disney colored plumage all over the cockpit, including all over me!!! He starts apologizing profusely, but I just said, "hand me your glove." He took off his flight glove (which he SHOULD have used in the absence of a bag!) and wiped off the vomit from myself and my lap belt. I told him, "hey, you can toss cookies on my, but I'm sure as heck not cleaning up with MY gloves!"

Man... I don't miss THAT part of the job!

I have a buddy who washed out of UPT because he couldn't keep the contents of his stomach from doing touch and goes when he did touch and goes. He was in Oklahoma (?) in the middle of the summer, and he's a skinny guy. So when he was exposed to the 110 degree heat on the tarmac, his stomach said, uh uh, you ain't doing this to me.

From what he told me, it was like Stan from South Park.

And he had the honor of cleaning up the plane, too!

On my first date with my now-wife, I took her flying up around Mt Charleston in Vegas. She puked quite hard, but wanted to keep on flying.

I knew it was love right then, heh heh.

Awww... That's sweet and weird all at the same time!

Honestly though, I didn't realize that flying made people so sick. Are these people who typically have motion sickness on the ground too? Is it certain conditions that typically cause it? I have a stomach of steal. So far it's not bothered me at all.

Well, it's not really that weird because she tells me now, 10 years later, that she really didn't like the flying all that much but wanted to keep that date going.

Whoops! Wish she would have just outright told me she didn't like the flying.

I had a guy last summer. We were out midday doing some steep turns and stalls in the practice area. We climbed high enough to get out of the thermal bumps, but had to descend back through them to get home. I took the landing since it was a pretty nice xwind. As we trucked down final I looked over and his head was back against the seat. I asked if he was ok and he didnt respond. I knew it was only a matter of seconds. As I crossed the numbers his hand went over his mouth and he let it rip in his hand. I put the airplane down quick(no time to be smooth with it) and reached over and popped his window. The newer 172 windows only open a couple inches. As we rolled out he let the remainder of his coffee and cereal trail down the side of the airplane, all over the inside of the door, all over his seatbelt, shirt and pants, and all over most of his side of the airplane. Armed with only a can of pledge and a roll of paper towels he spent nearly an hour cleaning up his mess. I left the windows open on the plane for 3 days. god forbid I should let that stank muster in the midday sun.

I'm fine on the ground, but can get an upset stomach in the air. I find that the problem is the lack of moving air. We started carrying a cheap, small, handheld fan in the plane, and I haven't had an upset stomach since. (I've never thrown up in a plane.)
