You know what is annoying? Airport Parking. Why the heck can't pilots park for free at Major airports reguardless of whether or not you are based there? To commute out of EWR, its $12 a day for parking. For LGA, its $22. Because I'm not based there (outstation basing!) , I have to pay those rates? Ridiculous. Its like I need a personal valet driver to drop me off at the airport everytime I commute.

At least both of those airports have decent mass transit. And if you work from your base, usually you can get a SIDA badge... I saw lots of Allegiant and America West pilots using the employee lot back when I worked in Vegas.

How do you get to HYA from EWR? Just curious cause a friend I used to instruct with works for Cape Air and it HYA based.

I haven't commuted to HYA yet. The company has me TDY pretty much all month, I'll be sitting reserve in HYA the last few days of the month. I think the way I am going to commute, is EWR to BOS, then either Cape Air or a bus to HYA. I could catch a direct flight on company aircraft out of LGA, but daily parking is $22. Its cheaper for me to park at EWR. I figured commuting for a pilot should be a walk in the park no? Not have to spend $100 a week doing it. | |

I park at an offsite lot just north of PHX when I travel because it's only $4 for airline employees when it's $10 for everyone else. Everytime I get on the bus I see tons of Southwest pilots and flight attendants. Is there some sort of offsite lot that might have a discount?

And whats so special about pilots that they should be able to park for free?

At AMR we had a commuter parking policy where you could park at one airport at the airline's expense. If you wanted to park at your base city, fine. You could choose to park at whatever airport you wanted, you just parked in an economy lot and turned in your reciepts monthly and got reimbursed. Some airports will give employee discounts to crews. When I was commuting from IND to LGA I wanted to keep my ORD parking badge (because we were going to be moving back there anyway, plus I sometimes had to drive to ORD to commute to LGA and to pay to park at IND was a lot cheaper than to pay to park at ORD), so I chose to pay on my own dime to park at the economy lot at IND. It was only $4 a day, so it wasn't that bad. I did not, however, have any sort of parking access to any of the New York airports, since I had an ORD parking badge. Had I chosen to use NY as my parking city, I would have gotten parking access at EWR, JFK and LGA, since we were responsible for trips originating from all 3 airports.

While this is a downside to commuting, there is also a plus side...kind of a glass half full thing... Since you are in the Transportation Industry, all of the parking fees, hotel fees, and unreimbursed meals, are 100% tax deductible. Although it hurts now, rest assured that you will see it again. Have you spoke with any local hotels that have a shuttle service to the airport? You may be able to speak with the management of the hotel and get special permission to park there during your away time... As a pilot working out of town 2 weeks at a time, I had an arrangement with a Holiday Inn in Lafayette, LA to leave my vehicle there for 2 weeks at a time. Just a thought. |
