DT, you got time to go to the retirement party (if there is one)?

Buzz was great! He always held his composure, was a great controller and really was a joy to share the radio with...

Sounds like a really great guy and a type we could use more often.

But isnt that the story of ATC right now? Losing the best to retirement?

Who is the grouchy lady who seems to be working ground when I'm there? My after landing flow has become automatic and I often forget to leave the transponder on and she always tears us a new one for turning it off.

You'd better get used to it. CLT goes to surface surveillance radar starting later this month.

I spoke to Buzz many times on the radio. I wish every controller was like him. "RAMex 142 ConTACT approach on 127.5. YOU have a great day sir!" We will miss you Buzz!

We thought we were losing one of our best in IAH last November, but alas, Happy Richard decided he was going to stick around another year. It always brightens my day to hear him. I'm going to miss hearing him out in SoCal.

We keep hearing rumors that Axe (the JetLincoln guy) is retiring soon. I'm really going to miss being able to talk to him.

A lot of the great ones are retiring. Soon we'll be left with people that ask you to take a 45 degree vector to sequence you behind a Brasilia at FL270 and to slow to 230.

True story!

DTW likes to ream you on that one, too. After two jawings, I kinda got the idea. MEM you're SUPPOSED to leave it on, but I've never had anyone say anything.

My best friend's dad has been an Atlanta controller for 20+ years, working in both approach and tower. I was having dinner with them shortly after I was hired at Colgan, and both of us were talking shop. I asked him who this controller named Buzz was, and he started going off on him in the most hilarious fashion. I was laughing so hard I was having trouble breathing. Apparently, all of his fellow controllers have a tad bit less love for him than pilots did. Something about seeing the tree but missing the forest.

Yeah, I've been forgetting that as well. ORD just started having you turn the transponder on when on the ground.

Wow sounds like the guy I talked to on my way to FL a few weeks ago. Very nice change of pace between the PMS'ing Memphis controller and the dude from Cairns who sounded like an auctioneer.
Bummer that he's leaving- I have pretty minimal experience, but it makes flying more fun to talk to a controller who seems to enjoy his job.

Is that the guy that has been writing a column for Avweb since 2001? That guy works at ZTL and he is retiring, or did retire a couple of months ago. His name is Don Brown.

Nope, he's a Center controller; Buzz is tower apparently. Although funny you mention Don Brown, some of his columns have gotten a LOT more interesting since he's no longer a federal employee. Good reading for anyone though, especially those getting an instrument ticket.

Having talked to him during my years of Supertug with Suthernjets I can say that I never heard him lose his cool or sound like he was lost when working ground on the 1700 and 1900 push and in an East bound operation when he was on north ground. He will be greatly missed by all.

There IS a difference between passing through his sector and sitting next to him all day.

I have sat next to Buzz all day many times... and would gladly do it again.

Buzz IS at the TRACON... Don retired from Lanna Senner (get Doug to translate) last December. Don no longer writes for AVweb, but he does have a blog called "Get the Flick"
