| I am curious as to how important or far back are they concerned about in a background check. I have never been one to keep that accurate of records or any for that matter. I basically have a few times in my life where I am not sure if I can dig up what my address was and what dates I moved in and out. I do however have accurate information for the last 7 years. Will the lack of information hurt my chances at a flying job?

| I believe most places do a ten year check.

| Think about it. A handful of companies hiring hundred, if not thousands of pilots. Think they have time to verify you lived on Oak St. in Armpit, AR? That being said, you should have as much info as possible for everything. I lived on couches in my early 20's pumping gas, flying and trying to stay alive. I can't very well provide an address for couches on T-Th I didnt have references for the months I took of one summer and went hiking. Be able to explain yourself and you will be fine. |

| Thank you. I figure about the time I am ready to apply to any type of flying gig (except CFI) I will have about 10 years verifiable behind me.

| If you're having trouble remembering addresses, pull a credit report on yourself (you get one free each year from each credit reporting agency). It will include a list of the place you have lived for about the past ten years. (It's a little scary how much they know about us.) And the airlines absolutely will check to confirm that you lived where you said you did for at least the past ten years. Not necessarily the exact address, but they are required by federal law to confirm where you have been and what you've been doing for the last ten years. That includes checking with employers and colleges to confirm employment and enrollment, and if you have any gaps in employment/school, you'll have to provide other information to confirm your whereabouts. These sorts of things can and do hold up the security check and (in most cases) your class start date. So best to get it worked out up front. MF

| As far as the Credit Report goes I too pulled one before my first interview and only my permanent address was on there (parents house where my taxes and what not are sent). I just don't believe that some guy in a tan trench coat and Ray-bans is out there calling, finding, snooping to verify my 10 year history. None of my references was ever called or former employers and a Security check is nothing more than running your social and Bday by with Federal, State Bureaus of Investigation to see if any felonies pop up. Thats all I'm sayin'. Yes. Have addresses, references, correct contact info. |

| Dude, no one is talking about lying. All's I'm sayin' is if you lived places you cant account for or worked for cash while in school or in my instance went hiking for three months and didnt have an adress, job or werent in school it's no big deal. Pilots arent robots that come straight from the factory. |

| Old Skool | so the 3 months I spend in Columbia shouldn't be an issue? I mean all I have to do is tell them no records exist because I was working for cash. ![]()

| Good luck with that. I've seen cabin crew applicants who couldn't account for a 3-month gap dinked into the pending file while it got sorted out. In the meantime, they don't get a class date, or a paycheck, or a seniority number. The regionals may or may not be so picky -- but the big ones definitely are.

| Agent Smith | Well, better start looking now! I think I hit my personal record last year as I was background checked three times. TSA mandate, SLC SIDA, and then the SLC SIDA redo.

| You'll also need to have a list of all of your addresses when you apply for a mortgage (why, I don't know). Do you have to have both an airport badge and an airline badge? The most recent project I worked on the process seemed to be that the company issued a badge based on its own CHRC and background check and then the airport automatically issued a SIDA badge based on the company's check (the company "vouched" or something). But I was not directly connected with the airport SIDA process, so I was never sure. This also may vary by airport, I suppose.

| Moderator | At ORD & CVG getting a SIDA badge (which, at ORD, is necessary to get into the employee parking lot) it's a separate procedure, requiring a visit to the airport's 'badging' office. Bring a good book, lots of patience and allow about 3-4 hours. Loads of fun.
