Hey guys, first of all, excuse my ignorance...From what I understand, I can get my student and medical certificate at the same time, since it is the same piece of paper and is provided to me by an AME- Is this true?

just make sure you check the box indicating you want a student certificate, otherwise you might just get a medical certificate and not a medical/student certificate.

What "box" are you referring to? Is there a special application I have to fill out? Is it this one: (?) http://forms.faa.gov/forms/faa8710-1a.pdf Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance

No, thats a form you will fill out (or not if you use IACRA) when you apply for a rating (Private Pilot ASEL) before your checkride. It's a form the AME gives you when you show up at the doctor's office. Or more usually its the form that his or her secretary gives you. It has boxes with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and student and then a bunch of other stuff like name, any medical conditions, etc, if I recall. You want to check one of the classes (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and student. Just explain to the doc that you want a student certificate and he or she will make sure you do everything right. |

I'll have to defer that question because I don't remember if there are any other requirements other than a photo ID. I do not think there are though, I just took my drivers license.

I'll give these people a call and ask them. Thanks! BTW...If anyone can recommend an AME in South Florida I'll greatly appreciate it

In box # 1 you will check medical certificate + student pilot certificate. Here is the form that you will fill out at the AME's office. http://www.leftseat.com/pdffiles/8500-8new.pdf You can also get your student pilot certificate through a designated examiner by filling out an 8710 form. http://forms.faa.gov/forms/faa8710-1a.pdf[/html] |

SInce last April, the FAA wants AME's to get a copy of a photo ID when a new applicant goes in to their office. (Security check?? )The "yellow" medical certificate has a medical certificate on the front and the area on the back for endorsements by the instructor for solo and XC flight. It is serial numbered where the white copy of the medical is not. The medical/student license can be issued for any class of medical certificate. |

The physical is the same for all classes of certificates. Some schools like ATP require a Class 1 for students to begin their program.

And also as a reminder if you're under 40 the medical certificate expires 36 months from the issue date but the student certificate expires in 24 months.
