Default State Income Tax

For you commuters out there. In addition to your state of residence tax return, are you guys filing a non-resident tax return for the state you are domiciled in? Is this even necessary?

When I was based in NY I was paying both GA state income tax and a New York disability tax so I'm wondering if I need to file something with New York?

Nope. Your home address determines your state income tax, not your domicile.

Careful there. Some NWA pilots got in big trouble with a twist of that....

I'm all ears on this one. I'm going to be EWR based but will consider my residence in Iowa.

Best advice...get a tax expert, especially one who specializes in airline pilots.

Money well spent.

I had one and it was well worth every penny. He was a CPA by education, and a Fed Ex pilot. His tax business is going to be part of his retirement income and his clientele are almost exclusively airline pilots. Best decision I ever made was to just turn all my tax matters over to him. In time I had developed my own system to keep track of things, based on what I knew he would want when tax time came. He knew the laws and was aggressive in using them to my benefit.

As I said...Money well spent!

Yep, a number went to jail for 6-12 months. They were kinda doing the reverse, though. Claiming residence in FL (no income tax) while living, registering cars and sending kids to school in MN. Very, very stupid.
