| Engine cowling? We don't need no stinking engine cowling! I'll try to find out from the Mesa peeps. |

| Supposedly it happened at altitude and had to go into DEN for an emergency landing. |

| Fake (sort of). They were using the airplane for part of a movie being filmed. Pyrotechnics were placed in positions that were supposed to give the engine appearance of fire (society's perception of engine fire, not necessarily accurate reflection of it) and the pyrotechnics malfunctioned, blew up and took half the engine with it. |

| Here's the story: Flt 2985 departed DEN on time and when the aircraft took off, the Capt side engine disintegrated. Here's some more photos: |

| Old Skool | Actually, Chris, it is very real. Flight was DEN-PHX 2985 (I think) and they suffered a first stage fan separation at around 23000. They also lost the cowling as shown in the pictures. Looks like they made it a non event and returned to the field. Oh yeah, apparently there was a fed in the jumpseat at the time. |

| I know pretty much nothing about turbine engines but arent most of the important parts still there? I mean you don't need the cowling to make the thing work right? How much of the engine is actually gone? |

| This happened Thursday morning. The cowling worked as advertized. No major structural damage as of yet other than the engine mounts, jet pipe fairing, and some dents to the fuselage |

| Old Skool | 250 hours is more than enough time to fly a jet.

| I take that flight all the time. I was not on that particulr flight last Thursday. Mesa (AWA Express) flight 2985 departs DEN at 16:34 and arrives PHX at 18:30.

The pictures correspond with a movie filming. When this incident you mentioned happened the other day, someone coupled the picture with the story, however, the pictures are from a movie filming. Yes, I'm kidding | |

Anyways from the picture it looks like not only the cowling went but it too the entire front fan assembly with it. It looks like what is left is actually what is behind the fan assembly, which are non movable inlet guide vanes. More than half the engine is gone, most of what you're looking at is simply cowling and not actually the engine. So to answer your question, no the most important parts aren't still there. | Oh yeah, duh, I looked at it again, the fan blades are all gone... Kinda like loosing the axel and wheel and all on your car I guess. Kudos to that Mesa crew for getting that thing back down in once piece... er uhh, sorta. |

| Looks like the kevlar shroud to me... and though I did not see it with my own eyes, in the pictures it appears to be the same color as all kevlar I've seen, and I believe I can sort of make out the woven texture. Just do a google image search for "kevlar" and you'll see what I'm talking about. |
