Default Near-Miss (T38)

I never understand why it is referred to as a "near-miss". It should be a "near-hit".

Whatever it is, it's scary!

Technically speaking, a near miss would mean you actually hit them, wouldn't it?

With the near miss thing it makes sense if depending on what context is used. It doesn't mean "near" as in almost, but as in close (proximity). It missed closely, so it was a near miss.

As opposed to "far" miss.

So it would be like a "near-survival" experience rather than "near-death" experience.
