Default Where do all the airplanes come from?

When an airline decides to bring some more aircraft on board, do they typically finance them or lease them? Does Boeing, Airbus, Emb, ect. have lease programs or what?

I cant really see them going down to the local credit union and taking out a loan for a 737.

I bring this up becuase I noticed on another thread, that Wells Fargo was the title holder of the Disney 737 that Alaska operates.

Gecas is one

I think they buy airplanes from Boeing, Airbus, etc. and then lease them to carriers. There is so much money involved it is staggering.

International Lease Finance is another company that buys aircraft to lease to airlines. If memory serves this is where Udvar Hazy who donated much of the money for the new Smithsonian Air & Space museum at Dulles made his money.

Sales to these companies are a major factor for Boeing and Airbus. The 787 has design features to make it appeal specifically to this market. The engine mounting system is 'plug and play' where either GE or the RR engines will mount to a common pylon. This way the lease companies can just swap out the engines to suit what the client wants.

GE buys an assload of airplanes, and there's also a couple huge firms that buy and then lease airplanes. Look over Boeing/Airbus' orders for them.

And since frog's post did not comply with his signature...

I've got a few A380s in my garage that I loan out on occasion. Just day trips though, and nothing more than 500 miles from home.

Hey, I like this, any time frog posts a serious reply, we should follow it up with

I'm pretty sure I heard that, at least untill recently, GE had the largest airplane fleet in the world.

I was going to mention ILFC as well. I think that's GECAS' biggest competitor.

On a related topic, many don't realize that it is common to lease engines as well. Unlike piston engines, turbines usually have no trouble making TBO, so it is feasible to lease them. You can also get loaners if you have a major maintenance problem. This is even common on business jets. If you frag a motor, you can just borrow one (for a price) while yours is in the shop and keep flying.

The head of GE Aircraft Financing went to Rutgers.

I had dinner with him a few years ago, quite interesting to say the least

I've seen a 747 that was owned by one company, with engines that were owned by 3 other companies, operated by yet another company.
