Default To HSI or not

I find shooting the ILS a whole lot easier with the HSI. We have a 182 with an HSI and Im thinking about taking my Instr. checkride in that instead of the HSI-less 172. Would asking for the 182 w/ HSI seem like "cheating" or should I suck it up and stick to the 172 for the checkride?

Either or. HSI's rock, but how much is the price differential?

A friend of mine was going to pursue an instrument rating this year. He asked me what I thought. I told him he needed to put an HSI in his airplane first.

HSI. No reverse sensing, easier to track, blah blah.

I'd definately take the HSI.

182 is $10 an hour more, and its a complex airplane, Retractable gear, variable pitch, but I think I could handle those and still ace the instrument stuff.

Just remember, things come at your 20 knots faster. I'm not saying its a big difference or that you couldn't handle it, but make it as easy for yourself as possible. Although you think you're prepped to the max for the ride, its a checkride and you WILL get sweaty palms and increased heart rate. If the 182 with the HSI is valuable enough to you, use it. Just make sure you know the details of how the HSI works (flux valve, no magnetic screwdrivers, etc, etc)

Thanks, I do need to study the HSI if I use the 182 forgot about that but thanks for reminding me. I'll use my last couple hours of training before the checkride in the 182 to get fully used to it then hopefully all goes well

There is absolutely no reason, why he can't shoot the approach at the same speed. I had students in the Seminole that tried to shoot approaches at 140kts. Just because you can go faster doesn't mean you should!

If you take the aircraft with the HSI, make sure you can fly a DME arc with it.
