| Junior Member | Hello all: I am planning to start my Comm. SEL in a few weeks and still don’t have a flight school picked out yet. Here is my problem: I would like to do it under 141 so that I will only need 190 hours. When you train for your comm. under 141, what are the requirements? I know at least one person is going to say go look in the FAR'S, but I did and don’t understand it. They say that you need 120 hours of training. But then it goes on to say that you only need 55 hours from a CFI in the areas that they list. So if I am reading this right: I need 120 hours of training but only 55 need be from a CFI. So is the rest solo? Thanks for your replies as this is really bugging me. |

| The 190 hours is only if you do your Private and Instrument in the minimum 141 time. If you took more time then that 190 increases. Some schools have combined the IR and Comm to full fill the 120 hours of training. I found that doing time building and my Comm part 61 was cheaper than 141.

| Then you are better off going 61 then. The "190" isn't actually in the 141 regs (or I dont think it is) its just the flight schools adding the mins for Commercial, Instrument, and Private.

| Junior Member | Yah. I didn't see the 190 in the regs. Their are only 1 or 2 141 schools around where I live and I think they are just trying to rip me off. They wanted like 14,000 for 70 hours in a 172 and 10 in a PA-28. I think I will stick with my local 61 school and get it done. ![]() |

| Old Skool | Just out of curiosity, which 61 school are you training at?

| Check out Falcon Flight at SFB. They have 19 planes in their fleet. $76 for the 152s, $93 for the older 172s and $110 for the SPs. Instruction is $30 an hour ($35 multi) and the instructors are very professional. There is no minimum hour requirement for the Arrow, Skylane RG or Duchess. If you are rated/signed off you can take it solo. Also, first post. Hi all. |

| Old Skool | Thought so. I got my PPL, IR and a lot of my CMEL there. Left when Hurricane Charley more or less wiped out the Seneca I was flying.

| Old Skool | The one thing about 141 is that you have to do every lesson in the syllabus, despite what your total time is. You're allowed to use part of your experience from getting your private...how much I can't remember. When I was working on my Inst/Comm, everytime I went out for a joyride, I couldn't count that towards the rating under 141.

| The 190 hours you hear so much about is a number advertised by 141 schools which is kinda deceiving. The numbers are actually minimums)35 for Private 35 for Instrument 120 for Commercial That totals up to 190 - but... You must achieve all those hours in each specified course. If you take 70 hours to get your Private, & 60 hours to get your instrument, you still have to get 120 hours in the Commercial - of which 55 have to be dual. Each Course has it's own minimum times; dual, solo, x/c, night, etc, in the Appendix of FAR 141. Taking, say, 130 hours to get Private & Instrument does not carry over into Commercial, so in this case the Total would equal 250. So If you can complete the Private and Instrument in less than those times, you can get to commercial in less than 250, but most people will take a little more than the 35 for private and instrument, so almost no one does it in 190 hours. That's flight school come on. But most can do it in 200 - 220 hours. |
