Choices, Choices

Hey Everyone,
So it has been a long time since I have posted. I have been out of aviation now for a while. Couple of years in fact. I have some experience under my belt though. (EMB-145 time). Anyhow, I have a buddy of mine that just became one of the chief honchos over at a regional company (no names). He offers me a chance back into the jet. Come down to the interview next month and I am hired on the spot. He will personally see to it he says. Now I know this is for real because he already did this for another buddy of mine with far less experience but still a great pilot. So here is the problem I am having.

I have been out of flying for a couple of years. I am married now where when I was flying I was not. I make really good money now with much more to come. All in all I have a really good life. A wife, a house, a dog, a german car with lots of buttons. One would say I should be happy and just shut up but I miss it. I miss flying so much sometimes. Its crazy but I miss the hectic life but most of all I miss taking off. Setting V1 and blasting through it and rotating and climb out and the view from FL390. I MISS IT ALL. So is it worth it? Do I go back to a salary in the high $20's if that? My wife has no idea that I am even battling myself with this, but this is crazy. I don't really know what to think. I think she would flip out if she even knew but I had to post to get opinions. What would someone else do even though the choice can only be mine. Don't get me wrong. I am really happy where I am in life now. In fact I never knew I would be in such a place.

So what do you guys think? Am I crazy to even think it? Anyhow safe flying to all.

Eh...if you were happy (really happy) I doubt that you'd have written this thread seeking advice. Or be seriously comtmeplating a return to "the life" so badly!

Depends on what kind of German car you've got. VW? You might want to consider flying for a living again. BMW or a Porsche? STAY PUT!

Eh...cars aren't everything in life. How about I promise to get you a $45k Audi if you don't join the military. Then at the last minute reneg!

Eh, I'm a Porsche fan myself. My dream car right now is a Porsche Caymen. You can't beat a mid engined Porsche!

I'm not really high class, my fave car company is Honda. But I guess my dream car would be a M6! If I had a car costing upwards of $100k damn...I'd be afraid to drive it! Prolly kill someone if they hit it,bumped it or scratched it!

IMO, I think you'd be nuts to get back into it. You currently live well so why take the chance of that changing? If indeed you miss flying so much, get current and rent or buy into a partnership. What could be better than flying on your own schedule to places you want to go? At least that's what I'm dreaming about...

Don't fix it if it ain't broken. The career progession has stopped, even at the best of regionals you'll only be making $35-$40k/yr for several years, with some increases after that provided your company isn't whipsawed.

Stay where you are and enjoy life! That's why we all work, isn't it?

Bingo. Before talking to us, talk to her. If she says "no," well that would be enough for me. If you're happy, switching back into this career isn't worth the strain on your marriage.

Talk it over with the wife because this decision will affect your marriage in one way or another. If she supports you in what you want to do then go for it but if she doesnt then dont. Its not rocket science by no means but her opinion and thoughts should be a huge deciding factor.

Thanks everyone for posting. My wife supports me in everything I do so I know she will say go for it even if she herself would not want me to. I think I was just looking to see what other pilots would say about this kind of choice. As for being happy, I am happy and content but not like it was when I was flying. But...I had an opportunity that was presented to me and I took it. It proved to be very rewarding.

As for the car, its an '06 BMW. I also agree with the statement about buying houses...if you get a chance do it. I own a couple and it will be a addition to retirement one day.

Stay put and enjoy life with the family! I've been back and forth a couple of times and now that I have a daughter I won't ever go back to flying full time. I used to miss it everyday as well but the feeling passes as you realize what's really important in life. If you can't get past being at FL390, then sell your houses and buy a share of an Eclipse or a Mustang. I recently saw a group out west that was basically a flying club but their airplane was a Citation....obviously not cheap but not as much as I thought it would have been.

I think the really important question is this: If you can't live without flying then why did you leave it to begin with?? Chances are good that you had a pretty good reason for getting out and chances are very good that those reasons are still there.

Having said all of that, to some people what's really important in life is to be an airline pilot....if you're one of those people then by all means head out for the wild grey yonder.....and if you do go back, can I have current job??? My wife has been looking at BMW's.
