Why are people so paranoid about the FAA and getting in trouble as a CFI? Things "coming back to haunt you?" Geesh... hard to have fun if you think every little thing will get you in trouble.

Anyone actually been "busted" by the feds? Or is this all from old airport lore and wives tales?

I have several friends who have been "busted" by the FAA....for rediculous things.

Some of it borders on blackmail. But enough doom and gloom....

I like that idea. When I finally get that instructor ticket, that's going to be what I do. John Smith...introduction to blah, blah, blah...all the way through John Smith, first solo...to John Smith, final prep for checkride.

I teach Part 141 and 61, and we use the Jeppesen Syllabus for both. I still write out the maneuvers we did.... hell, I sometimes don't even remember what was covered on Lesson 5

I hope airlines don't take it very seriously. My first CFI used to put all sorts of smart ass remarks in my logbook.

I had a convo with my DE for my private and he told me about a CFI friend of his who had written "Touch and goes" in the remarks section of one of his students logbooks.

There was an unfortunate accident with that student later where he was killed, while in the traffic pattern. The family sued and their lawyer used the fact that there is no mention of "touch and goes" in the PTS that he was not trained properly by the CFI for takeoffs and landings.

They actually won that case.

I can't give real specifics, I just heard this second hand, but It's sure scary to think of that being true. I just keep mine to the bare minimum of info.

My daughter got a hold of my logbook when I was at work one day, she thought it would look better with rainbow and smiley face stickers on random pages. She was crying her eyes out when I got home thinking I was gonna be furious. I was mad that she touched my things without asking, but I wasnt too pissed about the stickers. I kinda like them now. Will be a story to tell her when I'm instructing her on her PPL.

And if an airline has a problem with it, then thats prolly a place I would rather not want to work anyways.

Amen, brutha!!!

I do. In fact, for most instructional flights, it's the only remark in my logbook for the flight (I don't describe what we did - that's in a sepeate record).

Not to get off task fellow pilots, but just a quick question. I got my PPL in '04 and plan on having a career in aviation. I bought a smaller logbook with like 100 pages in it. Would it be a good idea and buy a bigger log book with colums for SIC time and just more space? The only problem I have with this is all my write offs and endorcements, along with my actual sign off for my PPL. What should I do? I know that I cannot sign my old instructor's/examiner's signature and have it be valid, but I believe I would benifit in the long term if I had a professional logbook...

There is no rule that you've got to completely finish up one logbook before you start another one!

The day I got my CFI, my original logbook was retired from service. It was too small for all the writing I was gonna be doing. I merely referenced the last page that I used in the book to Book 2 and started my new one. The only thing that stinks is I have to remember Book 1 whenever I have an interview.

It's weird my DE must have had that same friend.
Just one of those scare ya stories. But it is very important to write everything on the PTS at least once in the students logbook.
