I think the wheels spinning on the treadmill would cause a lot of extra drag like on a soft field, but the airplane could eventually overcome it and move forward unless the treadmill were moving exceptionally fast. How fast is the treadmill moving?

Yes, if the treadmill has it's own atmosphere.

WHOA! STOP RIGHT THERE!

The first rule of "airplane treadmill thread, part deaux" is that you must go back and read every single post in the previous thread on this topic (airplane riddle (taken from another board)) before posting here.

Not if it's a glider that you are trying to launch by pulling it behind a car.

I love the guy that said "Propellor aircraft aren't as 'speed dependant' as jet aircraft . . . "

Tire speed limitations come to mind, though. Might have more trouble getting airborne if the tires blow.

Thanks for posting that thread. It's hysterical.

Me, I love the breeze I get when I run on a treadmill or stationery bike. It really cools me off.

My favorite is this one:
Quote:
Sigh... you're right. If you're RUNNING on a treadmill, that is the case. If you're on a treadmill with rollerskates, and someone pushes you forward, you will move forward. It has nothing to do with a fantasy world. Do it yourself and see what happens. I'm not wrong. You are. Running on the treadmill is the same thing as DRIVING on the plane's treadmill. A car won't move anywhere. Now imagine Goliath is standing on the road next to the treadmill. He has his hand behind the plane. The teadmill's moving backwards at 500mph. Goliath will still push the plane forward, and it will move forward relative to a person standing to the side. It does NOT get cancelled out

Dang it... posted this by mistake on the OLD thread..... <sorry>

Quote:
Yeah, this one pops up every so often. It got a LOT of press a few months ago when Neal Boortz (an ATL based talk show host and militant pro-aviation voice) discussed it on the show and on his web site.

Fun to hear people try to "logic" their way through it.
