I just got done with a highspeed from CLT-MSY and back to CLT this am and I don't think we saw anything but clouds except for rare intervals in flight and during TO and the approach.

Oh yeah, the LOC 19 approach into MSY was fun especially with the winds 22G36 and 30 degrees off the runway.

The wind has been kickin' pretty bad in South Louisiana. I work at an FBO at MSY and I can barely stand up on the ramp. If we didn't have weather information I'd think another Katrina was coming...

Yeah, there was a guy in a Meridian in front of us that went around and CAL behind us reported +/- 30 knots all the way down final. The winds at 2000' were around 68 knots, so it was fun. Add in the LOC approach that is pretty rare and I was all wound up after we landed.

At least I was wide awake to watch DA Bears when we got to the hotel!

When do the airlines finally say... "To much wind, go somewhere else?" That seems very very dicey.

When it exceeds the crosswind limitation for the aircraft. In the CRJ it's 27(?) knots on a dry runway, 24 for wet, 15 for ice. Xwind also is generally based off of steady state wind, not gusts.

However, I'm not sure if all operators put the crosswind limitation in the "limitations" section of their books, so for some it might just be a guideline.

Keep in mind a 30+ knot wind in a 50,000# aircraft is a little different then a 30 knot wind in a cessna or cirrus

FYI those little dots aren't airplanes. Those are stations (airports) reporting IFR or LIFR.

That's a graphical representation of airports reporting MVFR/IFR/LIFR... not airborne aircraft on IFR plans. Anyone check out the prog charts?

Pretty much what he said. I'm with a new CA for the same trip, I'm done messing around with the winds in MSY tho, it's his leg or I'm going home. I'm doing a favor for crew sked BTW.

That's nice wind....

do it somewhere like this...in the dark, dead of winter. its can get pretty ballsy with 30 feet of width. most days were good, but some were absolutely rank.

That's crazy! Are you really based in Barrow? I have always wanted to go there just because it's the farthest north in the US. I've done Anchorage, Fairbanks but nothing farther north. Those would be some crazy airports to fly in during the winter. What kind of aircraft?

It has been fun flying approaches in this weather, I do have to say. Passengers hate it though, they blame it on small planes

sitting in my hotel room as we "speak"

it's a balmy -3 C outside with 16 knots of wind...and it actually feels pretty good outside...kind of crazy, but i even have my window open
