NWA plane makes emergency landing in Tulsa
Associated Press
Last update: October 16, 2006 – 12:13 PM

TULSA, Okla.-- A Northwest Airlines regional jet with 49 people aboard made an emergency landing at Tulsa International Airport after the pilot noticed a problem with a control surface on a wing, the airline said Monday.

Flight 5929 from Memphis, Tenn., landed safely at 9:44 p.m. Sunday. Passengers were switched to another airplane and arrived at their destination in Oklahoma City shortly before midnight.

There was a problem with the automatic controls for an aileron, but the wing tab could be operated manually and the Canadair regional jet was not in danger, said Philip Reed, vice president of marketing for Pinnacle Airlines Inc., which operated the flight for Northwest.

The malfunctioning jet was repaired at a Pinnacle maintenance facility in Tulsa and was back in service early Monday.

"The situation was quickly corrected,'' Reed said. "This wasn't a big deal.''

No control tabs for us....

Probably was just trying to simplify and put it in layman's terms by calling the aileron a "wing tab."

If it wasn't a big deal, why did they not just continue on to OKC?

Sad, but true. I actually have a MEM two day trip FRI-SAT. I'll be in AUS for about 50 minutes. At least it's an airport I'm familiar with. And no, this one wasn't me. I got tagged for jury duty tomorrow, so I was pretty much useless to the company today. I'm SUPPOSED to be doing DTW-OKC on Wed and OKC-MEM on Thur, but jury duty has me now calling tomorrow for a possible report on Wed. Trust me, I'd rather be flying. I gotta call the base manager tomorrow and find out what she wants to do....

Could be anything from duty limits on the crew (they get pushed pretty tight around here) to something not getting signed off correctly in the logbooks. If the passengers were already switched to another plane. doesn't make sense to send that same plane on to OKC in addition to that. There was probably another plane in TUL with a longer ground time, so they flipped them to make sure everyone could still make connections, etc. You also have to take into account that it's the director of MARKETING saying that it was "quickly corrected."

I don't have it handy, but I'm betting the QRH says "land at nearest suitable airport." I doubt this was something the pilots fixed in flight.

I'm not asking with sincerity, just jabbing at the PR guy who said it was no big deal.

1. Disconnect A/P
2. Release pressure on the control yoke
