Default Expert?

So, many people are calling out the so called "experts" and I was wondering how we would know a real expert from an "expert".

What are the requirements?

The other day at a family gathering I said something about taking a few passengers for scenic night flights over our city.

My grandmother then informed me that since a crash back in the 80's no planes have been allowed to fly over the city.

I started to explain and then just stopped myself...she was already convinced.

People are ignorant, no offense to your grandma.

I think experts are those that didn't cut it in the field that they are supposedly experts in, or those that do not want to gracefully retire or step aside when their time comes. So they slowly switch to being media experts where they can throw a couple of facts here and there and enjoy the satisfaction of everyone thinking highly of them.

I am generalizing of course.

For what it's worth, CNN DID get an FAA person to talk about the VFR corridor on the East River - so they at least tried for some accuracy.

Commenting on obvious ignorance is not an offense. There's nothing wrong with being ignorant most of the time, especially when someone's uninformed about something that in no way effects their life.

Good, but some would still wish the corridor (and any others through large metropolitan class B airspaces) closed.

Another attack on GA because of someone's mistake.

How do you mistakenly run into a high rise building with a flight instructor on board... oh, and a get-out-of-jail free 'chute?

According to the SR20 POH the 'chute' has shown less then 400ft loss on deployement, but as a guideline the demonstrated altitude loss from entry into a one-turn spin until under a stablized parachute is 920ft.

According the the track he was at 600ft over the river.
