Having a resume "walked in"?

I know a guy who told me his resume is being walked in to a certain regional, because of someone he knows on the inside (I think his buddy just made captain). Here's my question: How much does that really help the applicant, assuming all of the hour requirements are met?

I had 3 friends walk my resume into an aerial survey company about 8 months ago. Supposedly they were hiring and only liked to hire from references and "walk-ins" and I still haven't heard anything. Chief Pilot won't return calls either.
Having it walked in helps, but its not a sure shot, regardless of if you meet minimums or not.

Having a resume walked in is huge! When I'm ready as far as hours, I know where I'd like to work, and you have a much better shot of getting an interview by getting a personal reference from the company. If they get stacks of resumes and yours is brought in from an employee who recommends you, I gotta believe they'd call you first. Four instructors from my flight schol are now with SkyWest and I've kept all of their information, so when I get to that point, I'll call each and every one of them. No, it doesn't guarantee anything, but it can only help.

I am the hiring manager for many companies around the country. Here is how it works with me and in most cases. The order I look at resumes is as such:

1) Those that been handed to me by a reputable source (like current employee of the company).
2) Those who were referred to me by someone I know has referred good people to me before in many cases.
3) Those that email me or fax me and then call me on a constant basis to follow-up (trust me, before I tell you not to call any more until you meet XYZ, I at least had to see why you felt you were so qualified)
4) All others in some random order.

Where do you want to be on the list? The sooner my eyes fall on your resume, the sooner you'll get a call if you are qualified.

PS -So yes, internal referrals do not guarentee an interview, but it certainly increases your chances of one. So network with everyone you can. But also be sure to help others along the way too. It will come back to you in a positive way over time.

I dont know for certain either but it seems like if a pilot who's been with a company for a while (10 years plus) were to walk a resume in compared to a guy who's only been there (less than 2 years or so) a company might be more willing to listen to the more experienced pilot who has a buddy who meets requirements. Regardless walking a resume in might get you a call for an interview but in the end you still have to get yourself the job.....

It has worked well in my career so far. 3 out of my last 4 jobs were from resumes that were walked in.

It depends on the reputation of the employee who recommends and the quality of people he recommended before.

It could help the applicant to get an interview call the very next day or could be totally disregarded.
