Default Alaska, Day One

Today was day 1 at Alaska! There are eight of us in class:
Four from Skywest: 2 RJ Captains, 2 EMB Captains
One Eagle FO (several years in San Juan, several years in ORD)
One Frontier Flying Service (Fairbanks) 1900 Captain
One Empire Airlines (FedEx Feeder) ATR guy
One furloughed United/ex-Horizon/corporate guy.

Today was new hire orientation; paperwork collection, picture taking, and lunch with the chief pilot. We learned all about the history, values and goals of the airline, our travel privledges, a little about benefits, and took a tour of the training facility.

The next two weeks will be a hodge-podge collection of basic indoc, emergency equipment play-time, uniform fitting and ordering, hazmat training, etc.

We got our technical publications today- a box full of technical manuals, aircraft-specific procedures, and Alaska-specific Jepp supplements. It's going to take weeks to get through it all.

I couldn't stop smiling today! I'm finally here. Matt (aloft) made a comment a couple weeks ago that rings so true. He said that ever since we met two years ago, all I've talked about is being at Alaska. How true! This is my dream being fulfilled!

Stay tuned for more as the weeks go on....

Congrats to you, are you going through the MD80 or the 737? If on the MD80 & you bump into an Alaska Instructor by the name of Carter Teeters, tell him that Midnight Mike said hello...

I *think* since the MD-80's are being phased out that Alaska is no longer offering any training classes for that aircraft type. Again I only think!

I'll be flying the 737-4/7/8/9 ANC.

Newbies are going into the MD. There's a mass exodus from the airplane because of it's retirement, but more are leaving than are necessary, so there is a need for newhires in the airplane. I think there may be some MD assignments in the next class.

Maxie

The MD80 is not going to be phased out of the Alaska Air fleet sometime around 2008...

Very nice man! You kept your eye on the prizes. . . now enjoy it. But don't lose focus. . . not like you need me or anyone else to tell you this. Best of luck and stay safe!
